Congressman Jesse Jackson Jr. Resigns

Jackson tendered his resignation Wednesday afternoon in a letter to House Speaker John Boehner.

U.S. Rep Jesse Jackson Jr. has relinquished his seat representing the 2nd Congressional District, the Chicago Tribune reports.

Jackson resigned Wednesday afternoon in a letter to House Speaker John Boehner. A spokesman for Boehner confirmed receiving the letter, NBC reports.

Jackson, 47, is currently the subject of a federal investigation into his campaign spending. Several media outlets have reported that Jackson is in plea deal talks that could include jail time and resignation from the congressional seat he has held for nearly 18 years.

Although he did not campaign, beating out both a Republican and independent challenger.

Jackson has been in and out of the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN for several months after being diagnosed with Bipolar II disorder.

Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn will call for a special election to fill Jackson's vacated seat representing the 2nd Congressional district, which extends from the South Side, to Kankakee.

Patch will post more information as it becomes available.

JJJ is a sham for many reasons - he is hiding under the guise of "mental illness". While it is bringing mental illness to the forefront - it is all for the wrong reasons. This is showing that anyone "in trouble" can say I have a mental illness and that why I did what I did. It really detracts from the people that really suffer with mental illness. JJJ knew he was caught and he was looking for a way out with the best way of gaining sympathy and forgiveness via scamming the people. While he is only human - he is held to a higher standard due to HIS chosen profession and by his own public statements in he past - and the "i'm only human" excuse doesn't cut it. Why they offered him a deal is beyond me - no deal was given to Ryan or Blago as far as I'm concerned he should be sitting in the cell next to them!
Joe Lake November 22, 2012 at 05:51 PM
Exactly. We have yet to see the exact details of the 'plea bargain.' Former governors Ryan and Blogo pled not guilty, did not cooperate and are paying the price.

Debbie Halvorson is a Joke. She thinks she will play the race card when the AA vote is split, but she can never overcome the fact that in appearances before the newspaper editorial boards she came off so dumb and ill-informed -- In comparison to an already bi-polar and brain addled JJJ, that it was all they could do to even consider her a legitimate candidate in 2010. Besides , there are a couple of much better white candidate out there with substantial fundraising capacity...
Juvenal November 22, 2012 at 08:59 PM
This makes a lot of sense, Butch is the nom de plume of Debbie Halvorson! Level of rational thought seems about right.....
BUTCH November 23, 2012 at 03:33 AM
@ Juvie What editorial board the one that endorses Sarah Bachman, Akin, Murdoch and Palin I don't ever remember JJJ being in front of any editorial board! The So town or Sun times nope maybe the Defender, Is this yer attempt to sound like a non bigot, u have a lot of McSlime in u is it because of something I wrote? Oh My!
Juvenal November 23, 2012 at 05:38 AM
The Tribune seems to have altered theire direct links but here is a piece from the WBEZ web site summarizing their endorsements in the Dem Primary this year: "Meanwhile, Halvorson responded to the Chicago Tribune's endorsement of the incumbent. While noting ethical questions surrounding Jackson that've led to a continued U.S. House probe, the paper's editorial board wrote last week that the congressman "ran circles around Halvorson in our interview, showing a 16-year incumbent's command of the issues." Conversely, the Tribune wrote that Halvorson "is alarmingly unqualified to represent the district."" "I've never had a very good relationship with the Tribune," Halvorson said Tuesday, before implying the paper had a financial stake in a Jackson victory. "If you're going to sell newspapers, who would you rather cover? Someone who's on the front page or someone who just works hard and creates jobs. And my stories end up...on page 10."
BUTCH November 24, 2012 at 02:05 PM
@juvie. Incredible the incumbent ran circles around her in a phantom appearance unless they sent the board to Minn ! If it happened it is understandable she did not have the prepping and memorize the answers he certainly did if asked I prefer to respect the opinion of the Bourbinaise? GOP leader who was considering a run but would defer to her because he is aware of her ability and support she gave her constituents no matter the party affiliation while in SPFLD.. Debbie in her career beat a formidable GOP STATE SEN she ran against opposition not tokens, JJJ toughest race was his first he did not run against GUS or MEL! The MADIGGON machine ran 3 state officials to insure his easy win, he only had to beat one candidate and did so with his stalking horses. Debbie never dodged the media or canceled a appearance with inquiring minds! con't
Juvenal November 24, 2012 at 02:29 PM
For a major newspaper to list a credible major party candidate (one who had previously served in ILGA and the House) as "alarmingly unqualified: is really damning. The purpose of this election should be to upgrade our representation. People say we have been without representation for months but we have been without effective representation for decades: the combination of a lack of seriousness, gravitas, intellectual firepower, and predictable, far-left-of-the-average-Dem policies for each rep we have had (and each person talked about as a candidate now) means that the only think our reps do is warm a seat in the House chamber. We have a bunch of state legislators who have not done a damn thing to fix the state, or a bunch of aldermen who have been rubber stamps for Rahm and before him Richie. You think Will Burns can go toe to toe with the House GOP? Toi Hutchinson? [insert "interested candidate name' here]. These folks have mostly been sucking at the public teat for years anyway, they just want an even bigger salary and more prestigious title....
BUTCH November 24, 2012 at 02:32 PM
@ juv con't We can only hope and even pray we send our best which excludes all of the ammounced store front ministers and mail order divinity students, none of them has can solve our current problems and we have worse on the horizon with record lower rivers and lakes and high sea levels and another year of drought famine could be right around the corner this is now a heavily AG DIST as well as urban throw in the obstructionists, deniers and birthers now threatening secession, it would be good and bad they will kill themselves by starving and poisoning the great 8 state Aquifer with the KOCH BROS Trans Canada pipeline and us also. We have a local pipeline that springs a leak monthly the problems facing the nation that has never been talked about or addressed on energy and climate change one and the same, there will be no jobs or food unless we come to our senses, most of the moron talk on these blogs are for a return to the good ole days of slavery or putting women in their place on their backs making children to work as they did in the 19th century where the crawled in the mines with no need for education just pollution now the population has doubled in 30 years and eco systems are depleted that are the only real safety net we waste time with brain dead ministers, anti abortionists simpleton tools of TPARTYER fellow travelers working for Marxist vampire capitalists.
BUTCH November 24, 2012 at 02:43 PM
There is no such person in the district or State who can win without MADIGOON what is needed is someone who is not a minister who walks on water and does not collect more than 2 pensions currently from the taxpayers the congress is full of JJJ and mentals right now they are mostly on the right, JJJ is the exception for the left because his problems are more legal than mental.

A FITTING FINALE to dishonesty the lack of transparency fooling only their own selfish interests who despite spending a BILLION DOLLARS on lies make believe and hoping for a WHITER TURNOUT than 08 their misleading sound bites only ensured a OBAMA victory this scumbag who has been a TAX DODGER and DRAFT DODGER actually got 47% of the vote all that says besides a fitting FINALE is the wing nut lying scum have been dealt a defeat but will be back in just 2 years and will begin the assault on American on inauguration day just like 09 and why we need a rep in the peoples house who can and will work for the interests of the district not trying to suck out our SOCIAL SECURITY-MEDICARE to deliver to Wall street BANKSTERS whose interests are the 51st state Zionist Israel which is now an integral part of the complex IKE warned us of in his farewell in 1960.
BUTCH November 24, 2012 at 06:46 PM
The second district the new congressman can start the ball rolling on a reform of the National voting reform and may even get the few GOP who are not TPARTY to go along vote by mail and even by email is a start.
NotBuyingIt November 24, 2012 at 08:03 PM
Butch, I don't see what is gained by voting online or mail. Are we all too lazy to make our way to the poll on voting day?? Do we really needs weeks and weeks of voting?? We already have early voting and absentee voting. The GOP is done in Illinois. The GOP is done nationally. The demographics of all of the swing states is changing and I'm not sure we can win another presidential election. GOP can not attract the black and hispanic voting blocks. The white vote is close enough to call it split between the two parties. That leaves black, hispanic, et al. to decide the outcome. It's been said that the GOP is not inclusive enough. What would the GOP have to do to get a significant number of blacks to vote on our side?? What would the GOP have to do to get a significant number of hispanics to vote on our side?? I don't see it happening.
BUTCH November 24, 2012 at 10:53 PM
So why are u and the TPARTY keep trying to throw roadblocks, eliminate, purge millions of voters fix election machines have one pooling station in a county in some states cut back on early voting and on and on, hint they need to to survive and so will the Dem's eventually if they do not get the dirty money out of elections. The Justice and Green party's are in the wings with others who are disgusted with pol's who can fix things by cutting their own taxes and Dem's who pay lip service to ending the wars for TERROR-DRUGS and the ZIONIST state HEALTH CARE (single payer) and other issues. What the ole guard are scared of is better informed citizens make better government i WANT to get everyone involved for the good of the the commons, had we had more transparency JJJ would never have been elected to be a dog catcher.
Chicagoheightsmike November 24, 2012 at 11:38 PM
Marcus, I hate to say it but this time around your job is going to be tough getting 38K votes. You received anti jackson votes and anti republicans. Now you are going to be up against folks who can raise money and are not tarnished.
Chicagoheightsmike November 24, 2012 at 11:41 PM
Joe do you live in the 1st District or 2nd District, Just curious. Debbie Halvorson will not make a dent in this election.
Chicagoheightsmike November 24, 2012 at 11:42 PM
Juvenal, I have to agree with you. Debbie Halvorson came off as a "I don't have a clue how the federal government works." She will do better and just consult or something.
BUTCH November 25, 2012 at 02:46 AM
What a hilarious comment by chgoHtsmike Debbie came off" unlike who JJJ or MEL both were products of nothing to do with government, Debbie was the whip to Emil Jones in the Statehouse the same statehouse that a south side Senator served in as a one termer and became a 2 term president would a pol expert like Mike say that Barach Obama was over is head when he ran for the US Senate! Mike means she is from the white part of Sicily (her ancestry) she is too white to be elected, I'm betting the 2 district is fed up with charlatan ministers, the Jackson's and Shaws and other phonies and will elect a outstanding candidate like Debbie Halvorson.
