Deabel Doesn't Agree With Proposed Senior Facility Location

In email to Patch, Fourth Ward Ald. Josh Deabel said he supports a local senior facility but doesn't like the proposed location at 1040 Dixie Highway.

First of all,  I support senior housing options in Chicago Heights and would like to see it done in a way that promotes responsible growth in our city.

I voted against this location(The old Holiday Inn/Hacienda Inn) for the following reasons:

  1. Logistically, this location is not good for walking to places of interest or being close to the shopping needs for seniors.
  2. Would like to see other locations considered.  Such as the downtown empty parking lot, First National Bank Building downtown which is currently vacant and could potentially be converted for this use and also the WellGroup building which is scheduled to close at the end of this year can be considered.  Other location options could be put on the table as well.
  3. The downtown area would be close to City Hall, 16th St. Post Office, Library, St. James Hospital, Heights Fresh Market as well as the proposed SES Metra line and this type of project could help spur development in this area of town.  Also, the WellGroup location could help prevent leaving a soon to be vacant property.
  4. The property being considered is in a low lying area next to Thorn Creek and Wilson Woods that I believe is partially in a flood plain which could have potential flooding issues.
  5. Lastly, other good uses for this property could be expansion of Park District land use as the Park District baseball facilities already exist adjacent to this property.  Also if feasible, due to flooding issues in this part of town, this location could be explored as being used for storm water retention purposes to help alleviate flooding in the area.
