Former Home of Tropicana Nightclub Set for Demolition

The Tropicana, located at 620 S. Halsted Street, was approved for demolition by the Chicago Heights city council at its July 1 meeting. The demolition is being funded by a grant from Cook County.

After several months of waiting, funds from the county finally came, and the city of Chicago Heights can move forward with the demolition of the Tropicana building, 620 S. Halsted Street. The building, which is about 8,000 square feet, will be demolished this summer by Chem Check for a cost of $184,000, according to a release from the city.

The move was approved by the city council on July 1, during its regular meeting.

The motion was previously tabled at the council’s June 15 meeting, as the city was still waiting for the county to approve payment to cover the costs of the demolition.

The demolition is one of three which will be paid for with county grant funds totalling $300,000. The two other buildings approved for demolition consist of the former Klawinski building, located at 601 Halsted, and a fire-damaged factory, located at 1650 Union Street. The bid awards for those demolitions were $16,500 and $79,500, respectively.

All three demolitions are expected to be completed by the end of summer.
