Heights Taxpayers Unburdened by Historic Building Gift

The Chicago Heights National Bank building will soon become city property, and at no expense to local residents.

Chicago Heights is in the finishing stages of acquiring the historic Chicago Heights National Bank, 1651 Halsted Street, and it won’t cost taxpayers a dime.

The building is being donated to the city by the John Jordan family—owners the Diamond Detective Agency, which used to operate out of that location.

Mayor David Gonzalez said city will move its economic development offices to the new building in effort to alleviate some of the overcrowding at city hall.

While the building is reportedly in very good condition, some repairs will be necessary, such as a new roof. Gonzalez says any restorative projects will be financed through tax increment financing (TIF) funds.
