South Suburban Casino Could Be in Homewood's Future

Trustees will vote Tuesday on whether Homewood will work with the Village of East Hazel Crest to pursue a joint casino near the location of the former Homewood Hotel.

Home Sweet Homewood might be getting a touch of Vegas, depending on how trustees vote during a Nov. 27 board meeting.

Trustees will vote Tuesday on whether to partner with East Hazel Crest to develop a casino just southwest of the intersection of I-294 and Halsted Street.

Ideally, the casino would recapture the business of Illinois residents who cross the border and do their gambling in Indiana.

The location, which mostly consists of land owned by East Hazel Crest, will be accessible to 130,000 cars per day, according to the release.

Should trustees approve, Homewood will enter into a revenue sharing agreement and formal partnership with East Hazel Crest. Trustees will also vote to hire law firm Barnes & Thornburg for soliciting interest from casino developers. East Hazel Crest’s village board will do the same during its Nov. 28 meeting.

Though no vote on the matter has been cast, Homewood is planning a joint public meeting with East Hazel Crest sometime in mid-December to discuss the potential casino.

The local government receives only 1% of OTB parlor revenue. The Homewood OTB parlor opened 10-22-07 and closed in '09. Didn't last long, did it?

Illinois law does not permit another casino at this time. Call the governor at 1-800-642-3112 and your legislators at 1-217-782-2000, and tell them "NO MORE GAMBLING"!

The Homewood OTB parlor actually closed 10-08-08. It was open for less than a year!

Ideally, the casino would recapture the business of Illinois residents who cross the border and do their gambling in Indiana. Sounds as good as Motherhood and Apple pie! Who would argue with that? Let's not do any analysis or planning lets just focus on the money!!! Maybe we could contribute a few million in TIFF money too? How has that worked for Homewood residents in the past? Have they spent more (of our money) money than they have got back? Who has benefited? How did the previous OTB site work out since it closed in a year? Did that cost us??? PROVE to the residents that it will generate significant revenue and no crime and if it doesn't work out someone else will foot the bill. If you can't do that you better invest the money in something else that guarantees a return on investment....
