Political Analyst: Jackson Likely to Win Election by 'Wide Margin'

Despite U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr.'s recent two-month medical leave and eventual bipolar disorder diagnosis, Dick Simpson says the congressman will probably still keep his seat.

Congressman Jesse Jackson Jr. will win the November election with well over 50 percent of the vote regardless of a and, said a leading Chicago-area political analyst.

The 2nd District congressman has been far from the campaign trail for the past two months, spending a good amount of time at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, but that won't stop him from keeping his seat, according Dick Simpson, a political science professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago.

"Assuming that he does come back in September and make a few appearances, which it appears he will, he’ll win the election in November," Simpson said in a phone interview.

Last week, Jackson's Chief of Staff Rick Bryant told the Associated Press the congressman could return in a matter of weeks, putting him back in action come early September.

Simpson attributed his prediction partly to Jackson having weak opposition, such as Republican candidate Brian Woodworth. He cited Jackson's as proof of the congressman's continuing political strength.

"He won the primary by 75 percent against a former congresswoman with a strong base," Simpson said. "If he can defeat a major candidate, he will defeat the minor candidates he is facing in the general election."

Big Obstacles

Simpson said Jackson still may not be out of the woods. The results of the congressional ethics investigation and the bribery trial of Raghuveer Nayak, Jackson's former fundraiser, could have a major effect on Jackson's political career, according to Simpson.

A lot will also hinge on how Jackson handles the bipolar disorder diagnosis, according to the elections expert.

"If he took up a reasonable role in Congress, he ought to be likely to continue," Simpson said. "His own choices, his health and the ethics committee investigation could affect him."

Voter Opinions

Some voters have said Jackson's medical leave and poor communication regarding it will lose him votes.

"He should have come forward from the get-go," said Ramie Formentini-Zara on a Patch Facebook page. "I don't trust him anymore. He will not get my vote."

Faith Nichols also took to Facebook to criticize Jackson's handling of the situation. "He just disappeared without a word or without putting someone in his place to represent his district," she said.

When I see your name on the ballot then I will judge your performance of your candidacy...but for now I have the right to put Jackson's faults and record before the voters so they can "SEE" what he has done to you and not for you. I would be re missed if I did any less. Case in point, "LOOK" at Romney & his side kick Ryan...ALL they are doing is "ATTACKING" PRES. OBAMA.
Now, isn't that "Negative Campaigning" by your standards? I am doing just fine.

The real deal on Joe Lake and Marcus Lewis and their claim that the City News was paid $40,000 not to write anything else about the Marcus Lewis campaign. Why would these guys lie? They believe that if they can get get the City News to say Congressman Jackson paid us to not write about Congressman Jackson, then Jackson would be removed from the ballot because of criminal and ethics violations. They wrongly believed that by continuing to make charges against the City News that they would eventually force us to go along with them to stop the slander. Well, they were wrong, candidate Lewis may be shocked but his allegations and attempts to influence the City News to lie on Congressman Jackson may well constitute a violation of Federal Election laws, we have filed a complaint against Mr. Lewis as a result of the charges and attempts to intimidate and the City News.

James Taylor, Editor City News -- That's what you said in a telephone conversation before Aug. 1, 2012. Additionally, you said, "I got this check from the Jackson Campaign for $25,000 and I showed it to my lawyer. My lawyer said you are not an elected official, it's not a bribe, so you can keep it." Mr. Taylor added, "And I'm gonna keep it." Joe Lake, Chicago

Great Job Mr. Taylor. This has turned into a smear campaign and I think Mr. Lewis is a paid spoiler from somewhere. He is one who seems to smear and is excessively Rude. Not what I want to have as a Congressman.

Thank you Chicagoheightsmike. I have spent over four decades attempting to improve the quality of life for people in this region. I was very hopeful that when the district was changed that new resources would be added to the Kankakee community and I felt that that new resource would include able people to help solve the problems across the region. It was very disappointing to learn that Mr. Lewis and his group, if he actually has a group behind him, are so negative. I still believe that there are men and women in the new district who are willing and able to improve the quality of life in the district and hopefully, those people will work together to increase the economic and social and educational opportunities available in the district. The district is one of the prime areas of development in Illinois and we need leadership that can work towards positive growth which will benefit our children and grandchildren as well as ourselves. Mr. Lewis has shown he not that leader, hopefully either Jesse Jr. or Brian Woodworth are!
Chicagoheightsmike September 12, 2012 at 01:14 am
Joe , I never stated you are paid. Put a leash on your guy Marcus Lewis. He has become a joke.
Chicagoheightsmike September 12, 2012 at 01:15 am
Mr. Taylor, don't worry about it. Marcus just enjoys talking himself up. I bet he looks every night before going to bed, looking at his name on the ballot. He is going to fail horrible.
Marcus Lewis September 12, 2012 at 03:22 am
Amazing how lying and shading, coloring, shaving of the truth has become an art form. You lost fair and square to Woodworth who you in your newspaper vilified he and the President of Olivet Nazarene University, Dr. Bowling, then take $40,000 from the Jacksons and talk against them saying you despised them but you will take their money.
Now you are holding Woodworth up as a leader?! You are an unstable man trying to be right on all angles on both sides of wrong and wrong. You want to be liked but then you play smack down but also desire to tender the olive branch to the same person. That is call double-minded or "two-faced". But, below are your words as heard by this witness...lie or deny with you sadly it doesn't seem to matter, does it Mr. Taylor? James Taylor, Editor City News -- That's what you said in a telephone conversation before Aug. 1, 2012. Additionally, you said, "I got this check from the Jackson Campaign for $25,000 and I showed it to my lawyer. My lawyer said you are not an elected official, it's not a bribe, so you can keep it." I stand by what I heard you say and stand with Joe Lake and his reporting this incident to the FBI. I am not intimidated for telling the truth so why would I look over my shoulder, I am not Jesse Jackson Jr., he has that problem as he is hiding out in his house in Dupont Circle in Washington, DC. You better tell the truth to the FBI or you will lose and go to jail and at what cost, losing your freedom?! Not me. I like my freedom and not doing the unspeakable unimaginable and go to jail? That is a cost only Jesse Jr. and James Taylor seem to have no problems in risking.
The truth is the light and freedom, the lie makes you hide.
James Taylor September 12, 2012 at 04:00 am
It seems so strange that candidate Marcus Lewis has so few supporters but somehow managed to garner enough names on a petition to get on the ballot for the November elections. Guess nobody took a real hard look at the papers. Maybe a postal worker who has done nothing wrong would not worry about losing his job and retirement benefits. Guess getting convicted of a federal crime would cancel out those funds but then if one did not do anything wrong, and had God always on their side, and if they could call themselves honest and believe it themselves and when they had doubts had a good friend like Mr. Lake to second their opinion of themselves, then guess they would be ok. Guess they would be free to slander others and maybe, just maybe, beg, borrow or even steal a vote or so! As for me, I can't think of anything about candidate Marcus Lewis or what he may say that would be worth $40,000 to anyone, except maybe Marcus Lewis but then if it cost $40,000 what would it be. As for me, I can't wait until November to see and maybe hear the last of Marcus Lewis and Joe Lake.
Marcus Lewis September 12, 2012 at 04:29 am
Yep, just as I thought the last and only thing you have is the "lie".
"Guess getting convicted of a federal crime would cancel out those funds but then if one did not do anything wrong", I am a shame of having met a scoundrel like you sir. That $40,000 must be reminding you that you must go and do a woeful hatchet job on me fronting for the Jacksons. Your soul must be twisting in knots as your actions against me, who you have only met twice, think you know me well enough to continue the way you are. Have you no morals? What is wrong with a man who can't seem to get the message is "YOU LOST YOUR BID TO BE THE NOMINEE FOR YOUR PARTY!" GET A LIFE, QUICK FAST AND IN A HURRY...THE FBI HAVE BEEN NOTIFIED! NOW, GET LOST OR GO KICK ROCKS. YOU DON'T KNOW ME AT ALL.
Winston Wolf September 12, 2012 at 11:27 am
Marcus, will you still post after the election? It wouldn't be the same if you didn't complain about "voting irregularities" or something.
James Taylor September 12, 2012 at 02:35 pm
Yes, I do know you Marcus Lewis. Did some research on you my good man. I also know an "urban" threat when I hear one. You are sure to get some votes in November, you should come in behind both Brian and Jesse Jr. By the way, with the history of postal workers sometimes getting a little carried away, "DON'T go Postal"
Chicagoheightsmike September 12, 2012 at 03:07 pm
Winston, he will go crawl in a corner after reality hits him and hide. But we will all know him when he is hanging around the Matteson Post Office talking about voters will be sorry. How the voters are stupid? His neighbors will continue to hide from him when they see him come out for fear to listen to his rants. I give him 1 percent if he is lucky.
Chicagoheightsmike September 12, 2012 at 03:08 pm
LOL@James with "Don't go Postal". He has already been going postal, I mean can you imagine him as a Congressman. Someone come to his office to complain about something he voted on. He would have them arrested or something, along with a press conference telling folks, I will do what I THINK IS BEST FOR YOU. .
James Taylor September 12, 2012 at 03:20 pm
This morning one of the girls at our Momence office said she was fearful after receiving a call related to the 2nd district race. In fact, she was so upset I sent her home for the day. Don't dare say who made the call, but there is a concern here and we will notify the proper authorities just in case. You take care chicagoheightsmike.
After this is all over, lets get together and discuss some issues in the district and maybe we can combine efforts along with some others to get things moving. I love the district and the communities that compose it. In fact one of the former officials in Chicago Heights, Dick Derkin was a close friend. He has passed away but had moved to Michigan. His daughter works along with me at the Republican Central Committee in Kankakee County.

James, yes after this election we will sit down and chat. Mr. Lewis has become a true stalker of Congressman Jackson. I would not be surprised if he has a cut out picture of the Congressman in his house and having a debate.
This guy is really scary, I actually find him very unstable. If he comes knocking on my door, I would not open it up for fear he will get upset when I tell him he gets no votes out of my home.
