City, D170 Agree to Land Swap

Chicago Heights and District 170 reached an agreement on swapping land. The swap gives the city a key industrial area near 21st and State streets, while the District receives the nod to request city-owned land for a potential future middle school.

The city of Chicago Heights acquired a crucial piece of land on the city’s east side, after signing off on a new agreement with Chicago Heights School District 170. The deal, which was approved by the city council on July 1, gives the city key real estate near the intersection of 21st and State streets.

The land will be used as part of a ‘rail-heavy industrial park’ that the city hopes will draw manufacturing and distribution businesses to the area.

“The mayor knows the importance of the industrial area for the city as an economic hub. I think it will bring quality business and jobs to Chicago Heights,” said Chicago Heights Economic Development consultant Jack Hynes, in a release from the city.

The city received the land from School District 170, in exchange for the ability to request city-owned land for a potential middle school or academy in the future.

The revitalization of the city’s lower east side was previously outlined by Mayor David Gonzalez last year.
