Wilson School principal Tony Banks gave credit to the students' parents and teachers for encouraging and helping them learn the words, but said the students themselves deserve the biggest pat on the back.

"We're proud of them," Banks said. "They work hard. They had to stay after school to practice or (spend) part of the day being given the extra words."

The second and third grade competitors have more than one reason to be proud, according to the principal.

"Earlier in the year, we have a math competition as well," said Banks. "Our second and third grade team actually took first place in that. The same kids that were part of the spelling bee team, they were the math team as well."
