Athlete of the Week: Stating a Case for Marian's Green

Not much gets past the Spartans' water polo goalie, who is the best in the state, according to her coach.

Marian Catholic goalkeeper Devin Green can be an intimidating presence for water polo teams taking on the Spartans.

Not only does she have a knack for stopping potential shots, but she seems to claim any ball in her proximity. She also has a powerful arm that allows her to chuck the ball down the other end of the pool to spark her team’s offense.

Green's talents were on display last Wednesday at Lincoln-Way West, as she helped the Spartans defeat the Warriors 8-4.

In recognition of her efforts, Green is Patch’s Athlete of the Week.

"I feel she is the best goalie in the state of Illinois," Spartans coach Sean Scanlon said.

Green is quick to give credit to her teammates.

"I have a great defense in front of me that takes the pressure off me," she said.

The Spartans have had an up-and-down season, but Green has been steady throughout. The Spartans will be the fifth seed in the Lincoln-Way North Sectional later this month.

Green has an academic scholarship to Iona College in New York and will play on the school’s water polo team after graduating from Marian.
