The game—pitting West Side and South Side all-stars against one another—is a showcase event for the Norm Van Lier Scholarship Fund and its Non-Violence Legacy Campaign.

“I’m honored and humbled to be invited to play in the Chicago United Hoops Classic,” Moore said. “I’d like to thank all the people—especially the family of Norm Van Lier—for inviting me to play in the game. I’m looking forward to it.”

Van Lier, a former Bulls standout, died on Feb. 26, 2009. He was 61. His widow, Susan Van Lier, spoke at a recent fundraiser to support the Van Lier scholarship fund.

“Together we can promote peace and unity through the common voice of basketball,” she said in an article written by Fred Mitchell of The Chicago Tribune.

The West Side All-Stars prevailed in last year’s game, 118-104.

Moore and his South Side mates will be looking to settle that score.

“It’s a great honor for Donald to be selected to participate in the Chicago United Hoops Classic,” Bloom Township coach Jasper Williams said. “(He) brings the same passion and love for the game as Stormin’ Norman brought to the game of basketball.”

“I’m proud Donald is representing Bloom Township basketball,” athletic director Joe Reda said. “He is a very talented and hard-working player whose individual talents and team leadership skills are deserving of this prestigious selection.”
