Gimme 5: Marian Catholic Goalie is a Keeper

Devin Green was planning on playing lacrosse until she received some advice that changed her life.

Marian Catholic senior water polo player Devin Green has been swimming her whole live. But it might be the advice of her swim coach and current water polo coach Sean Scanlon that led her to becoming a Spartan stopper.

“I got introduced to water polo by him,” Green said. “He told me that I would be really good, plus I had experience in volleyball and was a really strong swimmer.”

Despite the advice, Green still was on the verge of playing lacrosse until she switched to water polo at the last minute and the rest is history.

“I have been training ever since,” Green said.  “All summer, fall and winter.”

Green is one of the top goalies in the state. She lists several factors that work into being a success in the nets.

“You need to be intimidating and know the whole game and not just focus on one aspect of it,” Green said.  “You obviously need to tread water well. Your legs are (your strength) and give you the entire technique. If  you don’t have leg strength, you will have a lot of difficulty getting up out of the water.”

Green is an outstanding student who received a full academic scholarship to Iona College in New York.  She also will compete on the water polo team. She hopes to one day to become a dermatologist.

She loves to collect designer purses and says teammates would describe her as a team leader who is a guru concerning all things water polo, including watching college games on television.

She is ever-grateful for Scanlon's freshman-year advice.

“He is one of my favorite people,” Green said.  “He introduced me to the sport I love and want to make a lot of my life out of, and I trust him as a coach and as a teacher as well.”
