Gimme 5: Marian's Lilek Strives to Go Beyond Good

Spartans' junior baseball standout Brett Lilek sets team, personal goals as he works to fine tune his all-around game.

For Marian Catholic junior first basemen Brett Lilek, this season is all about improvement. He is looking to improve what he does on the bump as well as what he does on the plate.

As a sophomore, Lilek compiled a 2-6 pitching record. He racked up 55 strikeouts and had 4.10 ERA in 45 innings. His batting stats were even more impressive. He hit .297 with three home runs, 22 hits and 16 RBIs.

But for Lilek, that just wasn't good enough.

"I want to have a winning record on the mound," he said. "I want to hit at least .400 this season."

Lilek began playing baseball because his three older brothers all played and he wanted to give it a shot. He said he used to play basketball too, but gave it up to focus on baseball.

"I just love the game," he said. "It's a good way to get away, hang out with friends and meet some girls."

When he's not on the field, Lilek spends his free time attending sporting events, touring potential colleges and hanging out with his friends.
