Marian Catholic Girls Basketball Champs Hope for Title Repeat

Returning players Teniya Page and Ashton Millender stay sharp playing summer basketball on traveling team.

After a state-championship season and a 33-1 record, the Marian Catholic girls basketball team knows other schools will be coming after them this year.

So this summer, they are working hard, reports Tony Baranek, a longtime watcher of high school sports.

Baranek interviewed Teniya Page and Ashton Millender, two of the top scorers from last year's team as they played playing summer basketball with the Illinois Defenders, a local traveling team, for a column posted last week on Season Pass.

Page and Millender will be returning to the court for the Marian Catholic High School Spartans this year.

“We know we have to work harder in order to repeat,” Millender said.

Said Page: “Everything is literally the same. ... I don’t feel any different, and I’m glad I don’t feel any different. It probably won’t hit me until I’m 40 or something.

“It is what it is. I’m just focused on repeating. I’d like a three-peat, with three straight years for me and two straight years for Ashton.”
