Marian Catholic Grads Set to Turn the Page

Spartan standouts look forward to continuing their athletic careers in the collegiate ranks.

As the 2010-2011 high school sports season comes to an end, the following Marian Catholic student-athletes already are beginning to look forward to competing on the collegiate level in the fall.

Six different sports are represented on the Spartan list, highlighted by the softball team with eight player moving on to the collegiate ranks: 

Girls Basketball: Maryssa Cladis, North Central College; Jamie Johnson, Lewis University; Simone Law, Loyola University; Jasmine Mathews, Bowling Green State University.

Football: Wes Fleming, St. Ambrose University; Marc Grkinich, St. Ambrose University; Michael Toliver, St. Ambrose University;  Alyssa Wlodarczyk, St. Ambrose University.

Girls Lacrosse: Hannah Conway, Adrian College; Alexis DiGiovanni, Augustana College; Barbara Jean Vega, Augustana College.

Boys Soccer: Jabari Danzy, Northern Illinois University.

Softball: Briana Clark, University of Indianapolis; Rachel Glenn, Missouri Science & Technology;  Rebecca Gray, Southern Illinois-Edwardsville; Bri Hall, West Point- Army; Trish Resner, University of Dubuque;  Shawna Sadler, Western Kentucky University; Nora Zerante, Loras University; Amy Ziems, Lake Forest College.

Girls Water Polo: Devin Green, Iona University.

Marian Athletes Reap ESCC Honors

The following Marian Catholic athletes were named to East Suburban Catholic all-conference teams:

Baseball: Robbie Cifelli and Brett Lilek. Both are juniors. Both return next year, lending credence to Spartan coach Phil Wail's optimism for next season.

Girls Soccer: Junior defender Mollie Lindeman was not only named to the all-conference team, but she also was named the team MVP.  Look for Lindeman to lead the Spartans next year along with junior Katelyn Kresal, named the team's most improved player, and Shannon Milazzo, team winner of the 110 percent award.

Softball: Despite an earlier than hoped exit in the state playoffs, the Spartan softball team had a year that won't soon be forgotten.

Becca Gray closed out her steller four-year career by being named Player of the Year in the ESCC, while long-time coach Kerri Evans won her 300 career game and was named Coach of the Year after leading the Spartans to the conference title.

Repeat all-conference players for the Spartans included Rachel Glenn, Becca Gray and Erashawna Sadler.

First-time Spartan all-conference softball picks included Alex Nickel, Briana Clark and Becca Stanton, who broke the school single-season home run record with 12.

Boys Tennis: After the most successful season in program history, the Spartan duo of Mitch Zavesky and Kyle Scheffers won recognition as Doubles Conference Players of the Year, andcoach Scott Bodnar was named conference Coach of the Year.

Boys Volleyball: Spartan junior outside hitter Will Craft was named to the all-conference team. He will look to lead the Spartans to more success next year under second-year coach Bob Piekarski.
