Marian Catholic's Childers Places 2nd in IHSA Boys State Tennis Tourney

Marian Catholic boys tennis standout Julian Childers won 6 of 7 matches and placed second in singles play at the IHSA boys state tennis tournament Saturday.

Marian Catholic's Julian Childers won 6 of 7 matches over three days of play and claimed second place in singles competition at the IHSA boys state tournament.

Childers defeated Jeremy Bush of Stevenson 7-6 (5), 6-1 in a semifinal match on Saturday at Arlington Heights Hersey High School. The win pushed Childers into the final.

But his bid to win the state championship was dashed in a 6-1, 6-2 setback to Jason Brown of Deerfield.

In double play, Marian Catholic's Mitch Zavesky and Kyle Scheffers won 6 of 8 matches, including four straight in the consolation bracket. The two finally were ousted in a 4-6, 7-6 (3), 6-4 loss to Zacko Brinto and Danny Wynbrandt of Highland Park.

Hinsdale Central won the team title with 50 points. New Trier placed second with 36, followed by Lake Forest 30.
