Marian Catholic Soccer Starts by Kicking Up Its Heels

Bloom Township boys cross-country runner Jacob Hernandez places fifth in Thornton Fractional South Invitational.

The Marian Catholic boys soccer team is kicking ups its heels in the early going. The Spartans are off to a 4-2-1 start.

Marian Catholic dropped a tough one in its opener in the Reavis Inviational, falling to Joliet Central 1-0. But the Spartans bounced back to beat Providence Catholic 1-0 before falling to Thornton.

The Spartans tied cross-town rival Bloom Township, defeated Andrew 2-1 and Oak Forest 5-0 and beat the Celtics for a second time 3-0.

This week, Marian Catholic will be participating in the Lincoln-Way Invite, first playing host to Plainfield South. The match begins at 6 p.m. Tuesday. Then, the Spartans face Reavis at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday.

Marian Girls Golf Second at Green Garden

Despite taking second in the Green Garden Coed Classic, the Marian Catholic girls golf team was happy with its performance.

Prospect edged the Spartans 324-312, but Sylvie Brick and Bree Veazey played well, shooting a 2-over-par 74 and 3-over 75.

Hernandez Paces Bloom Cross-Country

The Bloom Township boys cross-country team took third out of 14 teams at the Thornton Fractional South Invitational on Saturday.

Illiana Christian, with 38 points, took first, followed by Oswego East 70 and the Blazing Trojans 97.

Jacob Hernandez took fifth-place for Bloom with a time of 16:31.

Marian Volleyball Starts Fast

The Marian Catholic girls volleyball team started the season winning five of its first seven matches. Last Wednesday, the Spartans defeated Thornton Factional South 25-18 and 25-19.  

Amber Clay led the Spartans with nine kills, Colleen Rynne had 20 assists, while Nicole Manno added eight digs.

The Spartans will next be in action on Monday at home against Andrew. The match begins at 6 p.m.

Marian Girls Tennis Nets Success

The Marian Catholic girls tennis team has won seven of its first eight matches. This past week, the Spartans edged Lincoln-Way West 4-3 before losing a tough conference match to Marist 3-2.

Then, on Saturday, Marian won three times in its own quadrangular.  No. 1 singles player Giselle Beebe won all three times, leading the Spartans to wins over Queen of Peace (5-0), Bremen (3-2) and Bradley (4-1).

The Spartans will travel to St. Viator today for a conference match beginning at 4:30 p.m.
