Marian Catholic's Lilek Verbally Commits to Arizona State

The senior southpaw is considered by some to be the No. 1 prospect in the nation among the Class of 2012.

Marian Catholic baseball pitcher Brett Lilek recently made a verbal commitment to attend Arizona State University and play baseball beginning in the fall of 2012.

Lilek, a senior-to-be at Marian, is considered by some publications as the top high school prospect in the Class of 2012. He has spent much of this summer participating in showcase games across the country. For more, check out this article in the NW Times.

Sour Note on a Good Day at Olympia Field CC

Last Monday, Olympia Fields Country Club hosted the Middle Market Open, benefitting the National Kidney Foundation of Illinois. Last year's event raised more than $225,000 to support programs for the kidney foundation.

PGA Tour golfer Ricky Barnes was the celebrity guest of the event, which included a raffle, silent auction and door prizes. .

Calling All Young Football Players and Cheerleaders

The Chicago Heights Youth Football Organization would like to invite any boys and girls interested in tackle football or cheerleading to join them for the upcoming season. The Panthers just joined the Will/Cook/Kankakee Football League.

Park District Soccer Starts Aug. 27

The Chicago Heights Park District will offer soccer this fall, starting on Saturday, Aug. 27, for ages 5-12. All games and practices will be at Commissioners Park, 311 North Chicago Rd.

Costs are $40 for 5- and 6-year-old residents and $45 for residents 7 to 12. For non-residents, the fee is $45 for 5- and 6-year-olds, and $50 for the ages 7-12.

Craig Hodges to Highlight Fun Day, Aug. 4

The Chicago Heights Park District and 7th Ward Park Commissioner Kenneth Ochoa with Chris and Phillip Alexander present Fun Day on Thursday, Aug. 4 at Smith Park, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.

The event will feature former Chicago Bulls guard and NBA 3-point Champion Craig Hodges. The Park Forest native will conduct a basketball camp including skills and many more activities.

Registration is at Smith Park from 10 a.m.-10:30 a.m. It’s free for 10-15-year-olds.
