Marian Renames Stadium To Honor Longtime Coach

Dave Mattio was honored for 37 years as head coach of the Spartans during a Sept. 13 football game.

Friday was a special night, a lifetime in the making for Marian Catholic athletic director Dave Mattio. To honor his nearly four decades spent as head football coach, the high school renamed their football stadium after him, according to the Northwest Indiana Times.

Mattio retired from his coaching position in November of 2012. He compiled a 251-141 mark in 37 seasons as a head coach, making him the 19th winningest in IHSA football history, according to the Northwest Indiana Times.

“When I came here, I took a liking to the place because there were some great people here who became mentors to me,” Mattio told the Northwest Indiana Times. “I tried to do the same for all the students who played on my teams.”
