On Your Mark, Get Set, Go! Taylor Has Marian Catholic Football Off and Running

Spartans open with big victory over St. Viator. Rich Central ushers in Terrell Alexander coaching era in style.

The Marian Catholic football team started its season on a high note, dominating St. Viator in a 51-27 victory on Friday night.

Running back Jeruel Taylor rushed 230 yards and scored two touchdowns in the East Suburban Catholic Conference opener. Randall Wells scored three touchdowns, and quarterback Rob Cifelli added two touchdowns.  

The Spartans did what they like to do best, which is run the ball. They racked up 363 yards on the ground on 39 carries. Next up for Marian is Friday's game vs. Benet Academy at Lisle Benedictine University. Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m.

Alexander Off to Fine Start at Rich Central

Rich Central could not have asked for a better start to the Terrell Alexander era. The Olympians presented their new coach a 62-6 victory over Carver in the season-opener.

Next, the Olympians will host Oak Forest at 7 p.m. on Friday.

Bloom Soccer Kicks Up Its Heels

Bloom Township's soccer team won its first two games in the Windy City Ram Classic. The Blazing Trojans defeated Oak Lawn 3-0. Oscar Sanchez scored two goals, and Jorge Garcia had a goal and an assist.  Oscar Santana made five saves to notch the shutout.

In the Trojans' second match, they defeated rival Homewood-Flossmoor 2-0 as Garcia and Jose Estrada each had a goal and Santana made fives saves for another shutout.

Then, in the tourney quarterfinals, the Blazing Trojans were blanked by Stagg 3-0.

Marian Girls Tennis Flying High

The Marian girls tennis team swept to victories in its first three dual meets.

The Spartans opened with a 5-0 victory over Oak Forest, then beat Andrew 3-2 and cruised past Thornton Fractional South 5-0. Against the Rebels, Deana Williams and Kelsey Tierney won at No.2 doubles.

Savaglio Named to Skyway Team

Former Bloom Township softball player Nina Savaglio recently was named to the Illinois Skyway Collegiate all-conference second team.

Savaglio, a freshman shortstop for Prairie State, hit .333 in conference play and led the Pioneers in runs scored in conference action with 16.
