Softball: Marian Catholic Pulls Out Sloppy Win Over Homewood-Flossmoor

Marian Catholic 8, H-F 7. Despite committing four errors, Spartans find a way to beat the Vikings.

Touching All the Bases: Despite committing four errors and allowing Homewood-Flossmoor to score six unearned runs, Marian Catholic did what all good teams do--it found a way to win. The Spartans edged H-F 8-7 in a softball battle between old rivals on Tuesday. With the score tied 7-7 in the top of the seventh inning, Shawna Sadler led off the with a single was sacrificed over to second by Alexandra Nickel. Shannon Dee delivered the game-winning single with two outs to lift the Spartans.  It was a back-and-forth game as the Spartans scored four runs in the first inning, highlighted by a three-run homer from Rachel Glenn. The Vikings took the lead with five runs in the fourth, but the Spartans came right back in the top of the fifth to take the lead on another home run by Glenn this one coming with a runner on. 

Patch’s MVP: Spartan second basemen Shawna Sadler. Sadler made a great defensive play to end the Vikings' scoring chance in the sixth inning and promptly started off the seventh with a single and scored the game-winning run.

H-F Leaders: Sydney Battle went 2-for-4 with a three-run homer to give the Vikings the lead in the fourth inning.

Marian Catholic Leaders: Shawna Sadler went 3-for-4 and scored two runs, Rachel Glenn went 2-for-4 with two homers, five RBIs and two runs scored and Shannon Dee went 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

Quotable I: “Not the way we play (four errors), but good to come out with a win," Marian Catholic coach Kerri Evans said. "But that is not who we are."

Team Records: Marian Catholic improved to 8-3, while H-F dropped to 7-4.

What’s Next: H-F plays host to Joliet Central on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m., and Marian Catholic plays host to Mother McAuley at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday.
