Jesse Jackson Jr. is scheduled for sentencing on June 28. On Saturday, he joined his father at a Rainbow PUSH Coalition gathering in his first public appearance since pleading guilty in February to misusing campaign funds. His attorney, C.K. Hoffler, spoke to the group and mentioned the outpouring of support the ex-congressman his receiving. She asked those people to make sure the judge knows how they feel. "Our judge needs to know, needs to understand, the character and the qualities of this extraordinary congressman. ... This is the time to let the judge know how important he is to you." ABC 7 News cameras were the only news cameras allowed into Saturday's Operation PUSH meeting. Jackson Jr. didn't speak, and his appearance came as a …

If the Irish can stack government with family, the Puerto Rican can, too, says Berrios, who has several family members on his assessor's staff and a host of others on county, school and state payrolls.
"In government," says Joe Berrios, Cook County Democratic Party chairman, "people help people." So why shouldn't he help the people named Berrios with government jobs? Berrios believes he's just like President John F. Kennedy — minus the Irish, of course — and entirely justified in putting relatives on the government payroll. The various Berriosi pull in more than $1 million in salary and pension benefits, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. His family members are eminently qualified to hold the various positions he's hired or promoted them into. And, really, you shouldn't question this. As he told the Sun-Times Wednesday: “Look at a great president that we had, President Kennedy. Who’d he appoint attorney general? You know? Same thing…

There is absolutely too many opportunities to expound on the nepotism detailed here, so I'll ask just one question: $60,894 for a freaking toll collector??? That's over $30/hr. (The Tollway Authority is a whole separate subject of corruption). That job is a cashier job for crying out loud! Does anyone know of any cashier anywhere that makes half that amount. A cashier at McDonald's has a tougher …   more ›
Hoping to cut down on costs, Cook County Clerk David Orr will ask a judge to allow the election to coincide with the 2013 municipal elections.
Cook County Clerk David Orr is hoping to schedule the special elections to fill the 2nd Congressional District seat to coincide with the suburban municipal elections next February and April. "Synchronizing the election dates will save at least $1 million, reduce voter confusion, enable all military voters to cast ballots and possibly boost turnout," Orr said in a statement released Wednesday after Jesse Jackson Jr.'s resignation. Orr and the clerks in Chicago, Will County and Kankakee county will need to coordinate efforts and seek a judge's permission to move the election. The election calendar includes a Feb. 26 primary and an April 9 general for the local consolidated elections. Chicago Board of Elections spokesman Jim Allen told Sun…

A columnist who's covered Jackson since his first days in public office suggests Obama's rise sent Jackson to his downfall.
U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr.— who came into Congress bearing the heavy weight of his family name and lofty ambitions — counted Chicago's third airport as a signature issue for the better part of his time in office. And there's been no stauncher advocate for that project than Southtown columnist Phil Kadner. Construction of such an airport would bring much-needed jobs to an area plagued by chronic unemployment, and the airport itself, once realized, would serve as an economic engine for decades to come. So went the mantra. Targeted for a rural area outside the 2nd District until the latest congressional remap put the land into his district, Jackson's pursuit of the airport irritated Democrats and Republicans alike, from Chicago to Will …

Unofficial results show the 17-year congressman took the race by a wide margin, even without making an appearance in his district since June.
Jesse Jackson Jr. will remain the 2nd District congressman after defeating his opponents in the general election. Jackson took more than 60 percent of the vote, with more than 60 percent of precincts reporting across Will, Cook, and Kankakee counties, as well as the City of Chicago, around 10 p.m. Wednesday. Jackson's Republican opponent Brian Woodworth was frank when it came to discussing the congressman's absence from the campaign trail. “I don’t really have anyone to concede to, do I?" Woodworth said. “From what I can find in my records, I’ve actually performed better than any Republican in the past against Jackson.“ Woodworth did take major leads in Will and Kankakee counties, leading Jackson by more than 10,000 votes in the latter …
