Second Congressional Candidate Marcus Lewis says leaked audio of a Matteson pastor’s sermon is evidence that the current congressman is campaigning through religious figures, and that this particular church’s tax-exempt status should be in question.
This article was updated at 11:55 a.m. on Oct. 31, 2012 to include information about the 501(c)(3) tax exemption. Controversy erupted on the Patch comment boards Tuesday when we released an audio recording of Matteson Rev. Andrew Singleton Jr. vocalizing his support for the re-election of U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. The recording now has independent opponent Marcus Lewis contending that the pastor’s speech may be in a violation of the law and that Jackson is using religious authorities as a sneaky campaign trick. "He's campaigning across the pulpit," Lewis said. "His church can and should lose its tax-exempt status because of that." In the recording, Singleton tells his congregation at Victory Apostolic Church he continues to support …

Likening Jesse Jackson Jr. to injured Bulls superstar Derrick Rose, Congressman Bobby Rush says no one should be calling for Jackson's return to duty now.
Calling Jesse Jackson Jr. the "Derrick Rose of the Illinois delegation" to Congress, U.S. Rep. Bobby Rush says 2nd District residents should give Jackson time to heal. Rush and fellow Congressman Danny Davis met with Jackson at his D.C. home., then flew home to Chicago for a late Monday press conference, according to the Chicago Tribune. Davis said he and Rush met with Jackson in person for "a personal assessment of his mental and emotional state" — and during their two-hour talk Jackson cried. "He has not been derelict in his duties. ... No one is clamoring for Derrick Rose to come back before he should." Speaking at O'Hare Airport after arriving from Washington, Rush said Jackson left for the Mayo Clinic Monday. Reports the Tribune: …

An FBI investigation and the mental health drama surrounding U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. have not threatened his re-election to Congress, according to a poll released today.
Jesse Jackson Jr. shows a commanding lead over his two challengers, with 58 percent of likely voters saying they would send the beleaguered congressman back to the U.S. House for two more years, according to a new We Ask America poll. Republican Brian Woodworth would be the choice of 27 percent of voters, and independent challenger Marcus Lewis is favored by 15 percent. Woodworth said he will not read too much into the poll, but took an optimistic view of the results. "A poll is a just poll and not an indicator of success or loss," Woodworth said. "I’m actually encouraged because Republicans typically don’t make up a third of the district. So that means maybe some Democrats have swung over. We’ll see what happens. I’m going to stay …

The beleaguered congressman sends an automated phone message to his district in which he says, "I am human." The Rev. Jackson says his son will head for the hospital soon.
Jesse Jackson Jr.'s constituents heard from him this weekend for the first time since June — via a robocall in which he asks for their patience, thanks them and says he's "starting to heal." The automated calls were received in the 2nd Congressional District Saturday, according to the Huffington Post. In the minute-and-a-half call, Jackson says: "Like many human beings, a series of events came together in my life at the same time and they have been difficult to sort through. I am human. I am doing my best. I am trying to sort through them all. ... "I am anxious to return to work on your behalf, but at this time it is against medical advice, and while I will always give my all to my constituents, I ask for your continued patience as I work …

Halvorson, considered the most viable challenger to Jesse Jackson Jr. thus far, says she's happy for him and not soured on politics.
By the time Debbie Halvorson arrived at her election party at 5th Quarter in Homewood, her defeat was clear to all, but you wouldn't know it by looking at her. A cheerful disposition and a positive attitude entered the bar with her on Tuesday night. "All in all, we did what we could," Halvorson said. "I'm happy for congressman Jackson." Despite losing, the former congresswoman was adamant in maintaining her faith in politics and content with her decision to run. "I was never going to sit on the sidelines and allow Congressman Jackson to have another free ride—another walk in the park," Halvorson said. "He's never had an opponent since 1995, and we weren't going to allow that to happen." As the unofficial results stand, Jesse Jackson Jr. …

General Assembly and congressional contenders from the south suburbs spoke to voters over the weekend at an open forum hosted by Team HOPE and the Democratic Women of the South Suburbs.
Jobs, transportation, education — and the need to make sure the Southland's issues get a fair hearing in government — were front and center in a weekend open forum for primary candidates. Hosted by Team HOPE and the Democratic Women of the South Suburbs in Hazel Crest, Southland residents heard several candidates for state and federal office speak Saturday. In the 2nd congressional district primary, challenger Debbie Halvorson questioned U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr.'s ability to get things done. Jackson, in turn, touted his efforts on behalf of the third airport project. Patch towns in this district include Homewood, Flossmoor, Chicago Heights and Olympia Fields. In the primary for 19th State Senate District, Tinley Park Village trustee …
Second Congressional District Primary challenger Debbie Halvorson and volunteers rallied Sunday, where she spoke on several claims by U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr.
Just as early voting starts, 2nd Congressional District Primary challenger Debbie Halvorson and her volunteers rallied Sunday at her Homewood office to get out the vote and drum up more support for her campaign. Halvorson is vying for U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson, Jr.’s seat and insists that while planning for his Peotone airport project, Jackson didn’t consider the opinion of all Southland mayors. She questioned Jackson's ability to get things done, after he touted his efforts at an open forum hosted by Team HOPE and the Democratic Women of the South Suburbs in Hazel Crest. According to Halvorson, claims that she voted against President Barack Obama 88 times are untrue. She reinforced her support for the president. Patch towns in the 2nd …

Debbie Halvorson fires back Tuesday against Jackson camp, asking why the congressman hasn't renounced assertions by one of his pastor backers that she's backed by "demonic forces."
Pastor Willie James Campbell opened a campaign event for U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. this week by decrying the "Satanic forces" arrayed against the congressman in his Democratic primary fight. “We stand together, united behind this congressman, who stands in the forefront, battling political demonic forces that would keep us from receiving that which you have ordained for us to have.” Campbell, the pastor of St. James Ministries, Church of God in Christ, implied that God has ordained Jackson be re-elected to Congress and all those who oppose his campaign are doing the devil's work. “God has men in place that can go into spiritual warfare against every demonic force that comes to disrupt and divide people of God,” Campbell said. “We want …

Time for Jesse Jackson Jr. to go? Would Debbie Halvorson better serve the 2nd District in the House? You tell us.
It's "game on" in the 2nd Congressional District, and Debbie Halvorson is pulling no punches in challenging Jesse Jackson Jr. in the Democratic primary. The onetime congresswoman and former state senator blasted Jackson's ethics in announcing her campaign, and said he spends too much time in Washington, D.C., putting him out of touch with the district. She also criticizes him for not standing with President Obama on his jobs bill. Halvorson launched her campaign last Thursday at Bloom High School, her alma mater. Sun-Times Media reporters dubbed hers a "scorched earth" campaign at the start. There's much bad blood between Halvorson and Jackson. They've sparred over the third airport project, which Jackson championed even though it was in …

Former congresswoman Halvorson tells Phil Kadner she's been asked to run but hasn't decided whether to challenge the eight-term congressman.
Debbie Halvorson says she's filed a statement of candidacy with the Federal Election Commission for the 2nd District Congressional seat now held by Jesse Jackson Jr. Halvorson, who served a term in the 11th District until 2010 when she was beaten by Republican U.S. Rep. Adam Kinzinger, lives in Crete and her home would be in the 2nd District under the new district map. Halvorson told SouthtownStar columnist Phil Kadner that folks in the district have issues with Jackson, a fellow Democrat, but she hasn't decided to officially take on the challenge. “I’ve been asked to run by constituents who feel they are not represented. I’ve told them I would consider it and I have to keep my options open if I’m going to do that, and that means filing my…
