Martin Luther King's Dream: Three Essays from Bloom 206 Students

An essay contest brought out the best in Chicago Heights students. See what some of them had to say about a post-King America.

The "More Than a Dream" essay contest, held by the City of Chicago Heights, called on students to read or listen to one of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s speeches and write an essay about what they got from it. Seven Chicago Heights schools had students participating in the contest, according to City Clerk Lori Wilcox, who said the essays were so good she was unable to determine a clear winner.  The City has agreed to share the essays of three Bloom 206 seniors with Patch, and we have published them in our opinion section. Click on the name of the student whose essay you would like to read: All three of these students earned the opportunity to read their essays at the Martin Luther King Day celebration on Monday. Bloom Township Loses to St. Joe Angels During Missouri Trip

The Blazing Trojans dropped games to St. Joe and Incarnate Word Academy in St. Louis.

Likely, most of those in attendance Sunday for the Bloom Township versus St. Joseph’s Academy basketball game were eager to get home and watch the lineup of National Football League playoff games later in the afternoon. The Angels obliged, running up enough of a lead in the third quarter 53-25 to force a running fourth quarter clock against the visiting Blazing Trojans. Watch the game video streamed on the Prep Broadcasts Network. Ron Newquist’ South Land team got a taste of St. Louis. They lost Saturday night to Incarnate Word Academy 88-55, and to St. Joe Sunday, 66-29. Suffice to say a bite of toasted ravioli or Ted Drewes frozen custard might have been tastier than facing two of St. Louis’ primo basketball teams. Tough visit to the Loo…

2012 Year in Review: Five Great Chicago Heights Patch Stories

We're taking a look back at five key stories we published in 2012, but feel free to add to the list in our comments section!

March 16, 2012 The Bloom 206 boy's basketball team kicked off a year of incredible athletic accomplishments in Chicago Heights when they went to the Class 4A State Semifinals. The excitement surrounding the moment made for one of the best photo galleries of 2012. Team finished 4th and game home to a ton of support from the City of Chicago Heights, including a pat on the back from Mayor David Gonzalez.  Oct. 29, 2012 A broken wrist for Brandon Kelly became a blessing for the Homewood Cancer Support Center, as he raised hundreds of dollars by donning a pink cast and asking anyone that signed it to donate money to the organization. To cap things off, Kelly got to see his NFL rookie uncle, Dennis Kelly, play his first game with the …

Bloom 206 Administrator: State's New Pension Plan Could Lead to Cuts

Proposed state legislation would phase in additional costs to local districts over a period of years and increase the retirement age for younger workers.

A new pension reform plan introduced Wednesday aims to alleviate Illinois’ $95 billion unpaid liability by making local school districts pay more for teachers’ retirement benefits, while increasing employee contributions. Rep. Elaine Nekritz (D-Northbrook) unveiled the proposal on Wednesday, saying the plan would pay for the state’s entire unfunded liability. The legislation, as it stands, would demand incremental half-percent increases over the next 16 years. Bloom Township High School District 206 is already preparing for the financial burden. The shift would lead to a $90,000 increase in spending at Bloom 206 next year, according to Business Manager Ann Williams. The amount would nearly double at close to $180,000 the following year. “…

It might be painful but at least it better aligns the salaries these schools award with their long term costs. As long as school districts have no skin in the game on teacher pensions they will always award unsustainably expensive labor contracts   more ›

Keep Your Heads Held High, Blazing Trojans

They put together a heck of a season. Give the Bloom 206 football team a virtual high five with a few kind words for their awesome effort.

Let's talk about the Bloom Township High School football team. The Blazing Trojans made a valiant return to the IHSA playoffs this week after a 22-year absence.  Unfortunately, they took a heartbreaking 10-13 loss to Simeon on Friday at Gately Stadium in Chicago. Despite giving up a touchdown to the Wolverines after an early fumble, the Trojans used a field goal by Eufemio Fonseca III and a touchdown of their own to gain a 10-6 lead going into the fourth quarter. In the end, the Trojans couldn't hold on to their advantage. "We always say we are a team, and today we lost as a team," Coach Tony Palombi told the Northwest Indiana Times. "Every aspect of the game made a mistake at one point or another. So the game wasn't the fault of the …
