Girls Basketball: Sandburg Stuns Bloom, Advances to Regional Finals

Sandburg 45, Bloom 43. The Eagles mounted a furious comeback to defeat the Blazing Trojans and advance to meet Marist in the Shepard Regional championship game.

The Hot Read: Sandburg battled back from a big halftime deficit Wednesday night to upset Bloom in the Shepard Regional Semifinals in Palos Heights. Bloom led 15-12 after the first quarter and extended its lead in the second quarter behind an offensive explosion from senior guard Angenay Williams, who scored nine points in the quarter. Bloom led 30-19 at halftime. Bloom’s offense slowed down in the third quarter, and Sandburg took advantage of Blazing Trojan turnovers to fight its way back into the game. Eagles junior forward Jen Pache played a big role off the bench in the quarter, scoring six straight points to cut the Bloom lead to 33-28. Bloom responded, however, and with a Williams three-pointer the Blazing Trojans led 38-28 heading …

Girls Basketball: Bloom Shows Its Class on Senior Night

Bloom 48, Crete-Monee 30. Before the game, the seniors were honored, and it was a pair of seniors who led the way as the team played in its last Southland Athletic Conference contest of the season.

The Hot Read: Bloom started all seniors in honor of the senior class, and Crete-Monee hung around in the first quarter. Leading 13-7 at the start of the second quarter, sophomore forward Bria Gaines and junior guards Breanna Perry and Tatiana Perry came in for Bloom, and the Blazing Trojans took off. Bloom led 24-12 at halftime. Bloom’s lead was never in danger in the second half, and senior guards Tysheka Craft and Angenay Williams led the way as each scored nine total points. Bloom coach Marc Lopez was able to get some of the seniors more playing time than usual. Patch’s MVP: Craft (9 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists, 3 steals) was Ms. Everything for the Blazing Trojans. Girls Basketball: Rich South Topples Bloom in OT, Claims at Least a Share of Conference Crown

Rich South 53, Bloom 46 (OT): Rich South guard Kiela Garner scored 23 points and the Lady Stars had three steal to start the overtime period to hand Bloom a tough loss.

The Hot Read: The stakes were high for Tuesday night’s contest. It was a rubber match between Rich South and host Bloom, and more importantly, it was a battle of the top two teams in the Southland Athletic Conference. With only one conference game left after Tuesday night, the winner would be well on its way to being crowned conference champion. Bloom jumped out to an early lead and held it throughout the game. The Blazing Trojans led 12-10 after the first quarter, 22-18 at halftime and 32-25 after the third quarter. The team was playing well, led by junior guard Breanna Perry and sophomore center Bria Gaines. However, Rich South fought back in the fourth quarter and tied the game at 44 when junior guard Kiela Garner scored in the lane …

Bria Gaines' double-double led the Blazing Trojans to a 56-51 victory over Rich Central, the only team that had beaten Bloom in conference play.

Revenge was on the mind for Bloom’s girls basketball team. Entering Thursday night’s matchup with Rich Central, the Blazing Trojans’ only Southland Athletic Conference loss this season had come at the hands of the Lady Olympians. Bloom (14-6, 6-1) turned the tables and defeated Rich Central 56-51. “It was most definitely revenge,” Bloom sophomore forward Bria Gaines said of the key to victory. “Today was a game where we had to get it back.” The Lady Olympians (10-9, 4-3) were confident entering the matchup. Before the game, Rich Central coach Bryan Craig said his team was focused and well prepared from practice, and it looked like it in the early going as junior guard Tyron Eubanks-Thornton hit a jumper in the lane for an 8-3 Olympian …

Bloom used a combination of size and speed to roll to a 59-36 girls basketball victory over Evergreen Park on Tuesday night. The Trojans (11-5) forced 19 turnovers--14 in the first half--and took control from the get-go. "Anytime you can come on the road and get a win is big," Bloom coach Marc Lopez said. "We had some time to prepare for them, we knew what our game plan was and we executed it." Bloom's aggressive, yet patient defense forced Evergreen Park into difficult shots and turnovers that resulted in fastbreak points for Tysheka Craft (18 points, 2 steals), Bria Gaines (16 points, 9 rebounds) and Angenay Williams (14 points, 11 rebounds, 7 assists).
