Help Lorenzo Get A Second Chance: Adopt Me!

This week's featured pet is Lorenzo, one of the dogs rescued from a Dolton dog fight last December.

Meet Lorenzo. He was rescued from a Dolton warehouse after a police raid last December. Sadly, he lost his right eye in a dog fight before police took him to the protective care of the South Suburban Humane Society (SSHS). Despite a rough past, Lorenzo now has a second chance. Lorenzo loves people but, because of his upbringing, it would be best if he was the only animal in the house.  If you want to help give a desserving dog another chance at a better life, check out his listing on the SSHS website. Get in on the conversation. Join Patch today.

Cook County Offers to Help 'Fix' Your Pet

All Cook County pet owners are eligible for a rebate program for having their pet spayed or neutered during National Spay and Neuter Month.

Cook County is offering all residents a $40 credit for having their pet spayed or neutered throughout February—National Spay and Neuter Month. So why should you get your pet fixed? Spayed and neutered pets tend to live three to five years longer than those which aren’t, according to a press release from the county. If that’s not convincing enough, consider the millions of dogs and cats euthanized every year as a result of unwanted pregnancy. “The procedure not only helps your pet live a longer, healthier life, it benefits the community because it reduces the number of strays and unwanted animals in our neighborhoods,” Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle said in a press release. “Communities spend millions of tax dollars every year…

Shelter Pets Get Homes for the Holidays

South Suburban Humane Society wants to give every homeless pet a family this holiday season.

The South Suburban Humane Society is filled with pets that need homes, causing the shelter to look for new ways to get families for pets. And this time of year, a lot of these initiatives are infused with a little Christmas cheer. In one new program called Homes for the Holidays!, the Humane Society is asking for volunteers to sign up as "ambassadors," -- that is, the volunteers commit to publicizing five assigned pets that needs adopting via social media and posters around town. "We have 22 volunteers signed up as ambassadors," said Emily Klehm, Humane Society executive director.  The work is paying off, as 27 animals have already been adopted, she said, with about 100 dogs and cats still waiting to go home for Christmas. People sign up …

Maybe your shelter has found our beloved Jaguar. She has been missing for 10 days and last seen near Walt's Grocery store on a 183rd. Jaguar is a little over a year old and could possibly be pregnant. She is not very big and basically black patches of brown and her back left foot is tan. She is very friendly and knows her name. We are all very sad and miss Jaguar very much.   more ›
