Photo Gallery: Veterans Day at the Mound in Chicago Heights

Chilly weather did not prevent Chicago Heights residents from paying honor to veterans Monday.

Monday was all about healing, one way or another.  With American soldiers coming home from overseas conflicts, Mayor David Gonzalez kept his speech focused on helping returning veterans keep their heads above water. "We have to make every opportunity to help these returning soldiers find jobs," said Gonzalez. "It's great they're coming home, now we can take care of them." Warmth radiated the corner of Route 30 and Chicago Road as Ald. Wanda Rodgers sang God Bless America. Others joined in. Chicago Heights resident Andy Suppes, who helped design the Veterans Wall on the Mound, bowed his head and tried to keep his emotions in check. Photo Gallery: Hundreds Pay Tribute at Veterans Mound

The annual Memorial Day service at Veterans Mound brings out veterans, residents and elected officials as they remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice in service.

Looking over Lincoln Highway and Chicago Road, a few hundred Chicago Heights residents stood to remember those who sacrificed their lives during military service. Mayor David Gonzales and others honored those who died serving our country before placing a new wreath at Veterans Mound Monday. Congressman Jesse Jackson Jr. was the keynote speaker. He spoke about the first Memorial Day and how African Americans were a large part of that history, initially referred to as "Decoration Day."  Various American Legion Posts and VFW Posts gave a donation to the Manteno Veterans Home in place of flowers.  Hundreds of hands were placed on hearts as taps was played toward the end of the program. I remembered an uncle Gaetano Damiani yesterday who fought in The Great War (WWI) for the US and is buried at Washington Memorial in Homewood. Also my father, Settimio Damiani who fought in the Great War in the Italian army, survived the bloodbath in the Battle of Caperetto, taken prisoner at the Austrian border, kept a diary, which became a book some 30+ yrs after his death.
