Keystone Ventures, LLC, and the city of Chicago Heights are now in an option agreement on the former South Oak Dodge Location, 20937 Western Avenue. The agreement will allow Keystone to shop the location to developers before city council approval.
The city of Chicago Heights could soon have a new retail space, if things go well at an upcoming international developers conference in Las Vegas. During the conference, the city's new partner, Keystone Ventures, LLC, will shop the former South Oak Dodge location, 20937 Western Avenue, to potential developers. “We didn't sell it,” said T.J. Somer, the city's corporation counsel. “It's an option agreement to potentially sell it. Spring time is when these type of deals generally happen. Chicago Heights aldermen approved $27,750 in spending to M.E. Simpson Co. Inc., which will examine 185 miles of the city's water line pipes for leaks. Last year, the company found 35 underground leaks in the city.
The city of Chicago Heights once again will put its water line leak detection in the hands of M.E. Simpson Co. Inc., after the city council approved a contract for more than $27,000. The company will conduct tests on 185 miles of water lines within the city, a service it provided last year as well. In 2012, M.E. Simpson found numerous leaks in the city's pipes, which city water department employees then fixed. “M.E. Simpson performed this work last year and they found 35 underground leaks that never surfaced," said Chicago Heights Chief of Staff Lisa Aprati. Chicago Heights aldermen approved a resolution March 4, seeking to send 400 requests for proposals for development of the former South Oak Dodge Dealership. The city hopes to develop the land into a retail sales space.
Chicago Heights alderman aren't waiting for developers to come to them. Aldermen March 4 voted to reach out to potential developers in hopes of filling the vacant former home of South Oak Dodge. The city will send out 400 requests to developers, for proposals to rejuvenate the location at Lincoln Highway and Western. The city council approved replacing a department head with a consulting firm and operating two other departments with the help of a private company.
The Chicago Heights Economic Development Department is operating under the consultation of the company JPH Inc. for the time being, after the city council voted 5-1 in favor the move at their Monday meeting. The firm will fill the role of economic development director, once held by Joe Kudra, who took the city's early retirement incentive. Mayor David Gonzalez said the city has not determined whether the move toward contracting out the economic development department head's duties will be temporary or permanent. The former contestant on NBC's The Voice wowed the room with an a cappella rendition of "Ain't No Mountain High Enough."
De'Borah Garner, a Chicago Heights resident and former contestant on NBC's "The Voice," was honored in a big way at the Monday city council meeting. Mayor David Gonzalez presented the singer with a proclamation and a declaration that Jan. 7, 2013 would be known as De'Borah Garner Day. Garner graciously accepted the plaque, with her parents and other family members cheering in the council chambers. Garner thanked the city, saying she would always be "De'Borah from Chicago Heights." She then belted out an a cappella rendition of "Ain't Know Mountain High Enough" as city officials, Heights residents and business owners clapped. I love the idea of Trader Joe's. My wife and I drive to Orland to shop there. I'm sure there is a market in our area for such improvements. I'm a strong beleiver of the concept "If you build it; they will come" but we need to find developers that are willing to invest in Chicago Heights. more ›
