The former NFL player and current State Senator Napoleon Harris says Kelly supports the issues he sees as pressing to the 2nd District.
State Senator Napoleon Harris is dropping out of the race to fill Jesse Jackson Jr.’s former 2nd District congressional seat. His Wednesday afternoon announcement also came with a surprise endorsement of candidate Robin Kelly (D). “I believe we need to fight for more educational opportunity, better jobs and to get guns out of the hands of criminals and gangs that are preying on our neighborhoods,” Harris said in a release. “I believe Robin Kelly is the right candidate to pick up that cause to fight for the people of Chicago and the Southland." Kelly said she is honored to have Harris’ endorsement. Her campaign continues to build on a daily basis, according to her, because of people like Harris who support her aggressive plan to eliminate …
If elected, Taylor says he'll split his congressional salary among two organizations, all in the interest of curbing youth violence in the 2nd District.
I met with Republican candidate James Taylor Sr. on Tuesday, Jan. 22, way down in Hopkins Park. I interviewed him at the office of Kankakee County Board Member John Howard. Taylor talked extensively about race and even acknowledged the possibility that he might be labeled a racist because of his beliefs. Regardless, the candidate focused heavily on the plight of young African-American males in poor communities and feels improving their situation will curb youth violence. One of Taylor's biggest concerns was the poverty-stricken municipalities of Pembroke and Hopkins Park, which he feels have been ignored. Visit James Taylor's candidate profile on Patch to watch the extended video of the interview. The District It may seem strange to call …

One of the frontrunners of the race to fill Jesse Jackson Jr.'s vacated seat is taking a strong stance on this controversial subject. In today's Patch Exclusive, we learn more about Kelly's key issues: gun violence and economic development.
On Friday, Jan. 25, I met Robin Kelly at an office in downtown Chicago. We talked about a number of things including the possibility of a woman representing the 2nd Congressional District for the first time, ever. It didn’t take long for Kelly to give a clear picture of her priorities going into this upcoming election. Visit Robin Kelly's candidate profile on Patch to watch the extended video of the interview. Gun Violence By now, it's no secret that Kelly has made gun control a massive focus of her campaign. To sum it up, I've copied and pasted her recently unveiled "Five Point Pledge" as it appears on her campaign website: Economic Development Kelly says economic development of the 2nd District is also of concern to her. From getting …

To help you make a truly informed decision on Feb. 26, Chicago Heights Patch editor Christopher Paicely is conducting one-on-one interviews with every candidate willing to sit down with him.
Dear Residents of the 2nd Congressional District, Who should represent you? Do you know? Sure, maybe you know who you won’t vote for, but is there any candidate in this race with all the qualities you seek in a federal representative? A campaign mailer or a one-off news story can only tell you so much about a person. That’s why Patch is attempting a closer look at the 21 candidates fighting for your favor. We are setting up interviews with as many candidates as we can before the Feb. 26 special primary election and creating a comprehensive election guide, the likes of which you haven’t seen. The filing deadline has passed and the candidates have added their names to the list, but who will you vote for?
We now have a much clearly picture of what at least part of the ballot will look like for 2nd District voters this February, with 17 Democrats and five Republicans having filed their petitions before the Jan. 7 deadline. The list has plenty of notable South Suburban names, including state Sen. Toi Hutchinson, whose office is in Chicago Heights. Hutchinson announced her candidacy in a Local Voices post on Patch and has been considered a front-runner by some. Then there's former U.S. Rep. Debbie Halvorson, of Crete. She lost to former Congressman Jesse Jackson Jr. in last year's primary election for the same seat. Are her chances any better this year? Former state Rep. Robin Kelly, of Matteson, is another contender. She recently left her …
