Court Supervision: Unfit For Judgment

Two men were found unfit to face criminal charges this week.

Not one, but two men were found unfit to face criminal charges this week. For the second time in a month, Mark Lewis, 53, was deemed unfit to stand trial for the murder of his sister, who was found beaten to death in her Naperville home in June 2011. Lewis wants to act as his own attorney if the murder case ever makes it to trial. Also wanting to act as his own attorney—and deemed unfit to face criminal charges—was 40-year-old Jason Chance of downstate Lewiston. Chance already did prison time for menacing Will County State's Attorney James Glasgow through Facebook. According to a criminal complaint, Chance threatened to rape and kill the county's top prosecutor. After his release, Chance allegedly made harassing telephone calls to a judge…

Losers is too nice of a title for these idiots. What are they waiting for to throw him in jail? Oh, I know, when he actually kills someone! And then are they going to say; HE'S UNFIT TO STAND TRIAL. He doesn't deserve to be drugged and placed in an institution on the taxpayers dime. That is not punishment. It's more like a permanent vacation. Throw him in jail. That's the only solution here.   more ›

Can't Live Without D & D Foods and Country Squire: Facebook Feedback

Two local businesses got pats on the back from our Facebook friends this week.

It's always good to feel needed, right? Well, two longtime Chicago Heights businesses can carry that honor, thanks to comments from our friends on Facebook. We asked a question: What’s one small business in town you can’t live without and why? Here are some of the responses: Cathy Cada: Country Squire because I can run in and out without having to deal with crowds! Michele Lileikis: D&D Foods! Stefania Cipolla: I agree with all of the above Sandy Yacono: D&D Foods for sure! Looks like D & D Foods and Country Squire Foods better not go anywhere because at least a few Heights residents can't live without them.  Visit the business listings for both of these great businesses to rate and review them: Also, read our January 2011 feature story on…

Burros Ban on Pink Has a Lot of People Talking

You see a lot of pink on the football field for Breast Cancer Awareness month. But not on the boys who play youth football in Mokena. A clueless call? Or overreaction?

The boys who play tackle football for the Mokena Burros can no longer garb themselves in shades of pink if they want to remain on the gridiron. So says Burros Athletic Director Sal Della Fave. In an e-mail at the onset of Breast Cancer Awareness Month to his players and coaches, Della Fave laid down the law: Only small, pink stickers can be affixed to helmets. "This is the only approved addition to our uniform," he wrote. "No other pink item is to be added to the uniform ie. socks, laces, duct tape etc. I am holding each of you accountable to ensure compliance." Patch's story about the decision and the ensuing displeasure felt by moms prompted much conversation among Patch's south suburban Facebook fans and followers of Patch sites.  Here'…

Bloom Beats H-F and a Look at Safety in the Heights: Facebook Friday

Take a look at our roundup of some of the most interesting conversations happening on Facebook.

First, I would like to draw attention to our recent ascension past the 700-like milestone on our Chicago Heights Patch Facebook page! It's awesome to see all of the comments and conversations related to what's going on in the Heights. No one can argue against the strength of an informed, empowered community. Now, on to the comments. One of my Facebook wall posts this week was from Amy Browne Stockwell, who reminded us who would win if a Trojan and a Viking did battle: Hey Heights Patch - you have bragging rights tonight over HF Patch!! BT 63-HF 56!!! Go BT!! That's right! Our boys dominate at b-ball and there's no reason to keep it a secret, is there? Let's rub it in Homewood-Flossmoor Patch's face! It's worth noting Donald Moore made 17-…

New Businesses, Snowy Roads and Halvorson's Blog: Facebook Friday

A glance at what's going on at the Chicago Heights Patch Facebook page.

Earlier this week we reported on the opening of CarHop in the Heights as part of our ongoing series highlighting the incoming and outgoing businesses in Chicago Heights. In light of the 14th Street Payless Shoe Source leaving the Heights, we asked the Facebook crowd what they thought of CarHop coming in. What we got was a pretty straight-forward question from one Facebook fan. Faith Nichols: People couldn't afford shoes so we will sell them cars instead? Sounds right... Debbie Halvorson's campaign has maintained a Patch Local Voices blog for a few weeks now, occasionally posting what the 2nd District congressional candidate deems notable information. Most recently she posted an update claiming she is within "striking distance" of her …

Bloom 206 Goes Through Changes, Payless Leaves the Heights: Facebook Friday

See what our friends on Facebook are saying about Patch stories from the past week.

Chicago Heights Patch initially broke news that Bloom District 206 would be looking to cut as many as 15 teaching positions due to be overstaffed, according to Acting Supt. Lenell Navarre. The District will also be moving away from block scheduling and toward a traditional schedule. One of our Facebook friends, Tommaso Camilleri, gave his thoughts on the move: Nobody wants anyone to lose their job but the taxes in this town keep going up and my house value keeps going down..I dont think the cuts should come from teachers losing their jobs..the cuts need to start at the top! It's become common knowledge that the Payless Shoe Source on 14th Street will soon be gone. In fact, the store will close at the end of January at the latest. Here's …
