Park Forest Man Pleads Not Guilty in Fatal Gas Station Shooting

Dennis Joyner, the Park Forest man accused of shooting a man to death at a Chicago Heights gas station, was arraigned in a Markham courtroom on Tuesday, Oct. 16.

An attorney for a Park Forest man who is accused of fatally shooting another man over a rental dispute said Tuesday, Oct. 16 that his client pleads "not guilty to each and every charge" of first-degree murder and unlawful use of a weapon. Police say Dennis Joyner, 60, a retired state trooper was in a dispute with Robert Fortson, 40, over a rental property that Joyner owned. The dispute ended with Joyner shooting Fortson several times at the Mobil gas station in the 400 block of Lincoln Highway, according to police. Sign up for daily Chicago Heights news alerts. Man Accused in Gas Station Homicide to Be Moved to Medical Ward

The new attorney for Dennis Joyner, 60, who is accused a shooting a man over a rental dispute, asked a Cook County judge to move Joyner to the medical ward of the county jail because he has a chest defibrillator and severe gout.

A Park Forest man accused in the shooting death of a Chicago Heights man over a rental dispute will be moved to the medical ward of the Cook County Department of Corrections. Prosecutors have charged Joyner with two felony counts of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and eight felony counts of murder in the shooting death of 40-year-old Robert Fortson. Sam Adam Jr., the defense attorney for 60-year-old Dennis Joyner, told Cook County Judge Darron E. Bowden during a preliminary hearing in the Markham courthouse Wednesday, Oct. 3 that Joyner has a defibrillator in his chest and suffers from severe gout. Park Forest Man Denied Bail After Gas Station Homicide

Dennis Joyner, charged with first-degree murder, was denied bail at a recent hearing.

A 60-year-old Park Forest man, charged with killing a man over a rental dispute, will remain in jail after a Markham Courthouse hearing, Sept. 13. Judge Douglas J. Simpson denied Dennis Joyner bail after Joyner was charged with first-degree murder by the State's Attorney's office. Cook County prosecutors say Joyner shot and killed Robert Fortson, 40, at a Mobil gas station in Chicago Heights. The owner of the gas station told Tribune reporters Joyner waited for police to arrive after emptying his gun into Fortson in the parking lot of the business.  Joyner is a retired Illinois State Police trooper with no prior criminal record, Sun-Times media reported. He had been in a dispute with Fortson over a property Joyner was renting to the victim…
