Humiliating Your Pets for the Holidays? So Are We.

Share your funny pet holiday photos with Patch! We'll even get you started.

'Tis the season to trim the tree, deck the halls—and dress the dog in a Santa suit? It's OK—a lot of pet owners seem to get a kick out parading their favorite four-legged friend in a red felt hat topped with a puff of white. And kids aren't the only ones starring in photos with Santa Claus. I admit to slipping a pair of antlers on my horses Ziggy and Finn, though Finn prefers the Santa hat. And my dog Huck doesn't know it yet, but there's a Santa suit with his name on it. I've showed you mine, now how about you show me your photos of pets decked out for the holidays. Just log in, click "Submit Photo and Video" and then select your desired photo to add to the album. Don't forget to proudly claim the photo and pet by leaving your pet's name …

POLL: Are We Losing Thanksgiving as a Holiday?

With retailers starting to think about opening on the holiday, has Turkey Day become just another day? Tell us what you think.

Earlier this week, Steve Grzanich, an afternoon anchor and reporter for WBBM-AM (780), tweeted an interesting thought: Are we losing #Thanksgiving as a holiday? Christmas season starts now before Halloween w/very little mention of Turkey Day. #stoprushingxmas Right now, grocery stores have limited—and sometimes full—hours on Thanksgiving. Retailers are opening earlier and earlier to catch the Black Friday wave. Target is opening at midnight, and Toys R Us will be open at 9 p.m. on Thanksgiving.  Has Thanksgiving lost its holiday appeal? Will it eventually become as significant as Arbor Day or Columbus Day? Have we lost it as a day off to be spent with family and copious amounts of food? Take our poll and tell us what you think in our …

I agree with the comments that Thanksgiving is getting lost in all the commercialism of Christmas. I couldn't believe how many Christmas commercials ran before Halloween this year. It makes me sick! Not to mention the stores putting out Christmas decorations shortly after Labor Day. The only stores that should be able to sell Christmas items are the craft supply stores so that people can get a …   more ›

3 Ways to Celebrate Dr. King's Birthday

The legendary civil rights activist's birthday may be tomorrow, but has become tradition to officially celebrate it on the following Monday.

The world lost a pioneer in civil rights more than 40 years ago, but Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s impact continues to resonate today. In celebration of the national holiday your Chicago Heights Patch would like to highlight a few events going on near you Monday. 1.  "Dream Like A King" Youth Empowerment Day - Take your children over to Sergeant Means Park for a celebration that will include musical guest, poetry and special performances, one of which will be a theatrical production by Chicago youth organization Kidz Korna. If you registered early and you'll receive a free lunch. The event times are 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and 6-7:30 p.m. 2. King Day Movie Matinee - Steger-South Chicago Heights Library will be celebrating Dr. King's birthday …

Holiday Aftermath: The Art of Regifting

So the holidays have passed and you have one too many can openers. Learn the rules of regifting.

Okay, it was a nice gesture but what to do with that gift of white chocolate that wreaks havoc on your stomach? And what of the purple angora jacket that's not quite your style? Or the flashy, costume earrings that simply don't work. The solution is regifting, and it can be very effective if you follow the rules. One cardinal rule is to make sure there are no tags in the wrapping left from the original gift giver. Countless stories abound from the careless who passed on unwanted gifts forgetting to remove the initial tags, notes and cards. The details were not pleasant. Another concern is the wrapping. Aesthetics is key. Change the wrapping. Repeat. Change the wrapping. All of it. Tissue. Outside paper. Ties, riboons, bows. Can't get much …

St. James Chaplains Help Patients Cope With Christmas in the Hospital

It's no fun being in the hospital, especially this time of year. A Chicago Heights chaplain talks about ministering to patients who won't be home for the holidays.

The elderly woman was ill and alone on Christmas, and hadn't had a visitor in three weeks. So Chaplain Dobaro Dogisso and other members of the hospital staff put a small Christmas tree in her room, gave her a small gift and sang her a Christmas carol. It was time well-spent just to see the smile on her face, Dogisso remembers. Being in the hospital is difficult and stressful any time, but especially so during the holidays, said Dogisso, a chaplain at St. James Hospital in Chicago Heights. Even patients fortunate enough to have loved ones with them still must cope with the knowledge they will not be home for the family's holiday rituals. They will not be there to watch their children or grandchildren open presents or enjoy Christmas dinner…

Holiday Recipes: Red Beans, Rice and a Little Cheating

Bring the 7th Ward to your Holiday Dinner with Red Beans and Rice.

Although Alicia Guidry has roots that reach all the way to the 7th ward in New Orleans, Lake Charles and Opelousas, Louisiana, she is not afraid to admit that when it comes to making red beans and rice, she cuts corners. "Since I'm 26, I cheat," the Olympia Fields resident said. "I use Zatarain's brand red beans and rice, packaged smoked sausage and, what every Creole should have in their kitchen, Tony's Chacheres' Creole Seasoning."  While some people may cringe because she isn't making this dish from scratch, Guidry says no one's complaining. She says her "quickie" version of red beans and rice stands up to her other family holiday meal staples, such as macaroni and cheese made with spaghetti noodles, gumbo, jambalaya, roasted duck and…
