Dogs Rescued from 'Face of Evil' Recovering at Chicago Heights Shelter

South Suburban Humane Society is caring for seven dogs rescued from a Dolton dog-fighting operation.

Article updated on Dec. 7, 2012 at 9:41 a.m. Lorenzo's eye bulged out of its socket as he lay isolated in a back room at the South Suburban Humane Society (SSHS). He's a dog nice enough to cuddle up on a stranger's lap. But when it comes to other dogs, Lorenzo only knows “attack,” according to Emily Klehm, the shelter's executive director. That’s because Lorenzo was raised specifically to fight other dogs for human spectacle. And that’s exactly what he was doing at an old Dolton warehouse. Eight suspects were arrested in connection with the operation after Cook County Sheriff's police received a tip about the fights. Police notified SSHS about the dogs and investigators were sent to the scene, Klehm said. They returned with all seven …

Adopt Me!

Will Kaylee Be Home for the Holidays? Adopt Me!

A tortoiseshell short-hair cat that will watch TV with you, Kaylee could use a forever home this winter.

Meet Kaylee. She's a 3-year-old domestic short-hair mix with a long black tail, who serves as a wonderful lap warmer, according to South Suburban Humane Society staff. Kaylee lost her home when her owner became ill and was unable to care for her. Thanks to a friendship with her cage-mate at the shelter, it appears Kaylee gets along well with other cats. Kaylee isn't needy or attention-starved but can be affectionate toward people, according to SSHS staff. Kaylee has been spayed. To learn more about Kaylee, visit her listing on the South Suburban Humane Society's (SSHS) website! PLEASE VISIT THE SSHS LISTING IN OUR PATCH PLACES DIRECTORY

Adopt Me!

Squiggles, the Gentle Giant: Adopt Me!

A big fawn and white dog that loves to play with other dogs.

Meet Squiggles, a one-year-old Terrier-Pit Bull mix that found his way to the South Suburban Humane Society when his owners moved. Squiggles is pretty big but he walks well on a leash, can sit and shake and loves squeaky toys, according to SSHS staff. He also gets along with other dogs, as long as they can keep up with him. Because Squiggles is so big, he probably shouldn't go to a home with small children, as he could knock them over. Squiggles has been neutered and needs a bath and nail trim from time to time. For information about this dog, please contact the South Suburban Humane Society.

Adopt-A-Thon Hopes to Find Homes For 200 Animals This Weekend

Dogs, cats and rabbits from 16 shelters and humane societies throughout the region can be seen this weekend.

The Rascop family of Tinley Park might be in for some trouble. Heather, 7, wants a medium-sized dog. Her brother Brian, 5, wants a tiny one. Heather wants a dog she can walk. Brian wants an indoor dog. And of course, they'll walk it and feed it and take care of it. "So they say, right?" said mother Maureen Rascop, chuckling. Whatever type of dog the family looks for, chances are they'll find it at the Mega Adopt-A-Thon at the Tinley Park PetSmart this weekend. The event, hosted by the South Suburban Humane Society is bringing together 16 area shelters, humane societies, rescues and other agencies this weekend with one goal: find homes for 200 pets. "We're excited about the level of interest and about getting the pets homes," South Suburban…
