The heaviest travel is expected Wednesday, when 1.7 million vehicles are projected to be on the road, according to tollway officials.

Wednesday is expected to be the busiest travel day, with 1.7 million drivers projected to be on the road. On an average day, about 1.4 million vehicles use the Tollway, officials said. "The Illinois Tollway is expected to be busier than usual this holiday season," said Illinois Tollway Executive Director Kristi Lafleur in a press release. "We urge our customers to focus on the road by putting their cell phones away, and more importantly, remember that it is always illegal to text while driving in Illinois." …

Updated Dec. 16, 2011 at 8:54 a.m. The Illinois Tollway board needs to be better at seeking minority contractors and guiding work toward the South Suburbs, according to Chicago Heights Mayor David Gonzalez. That's why he said he refused to vote to approve several 2012 construction projects Wednesday, supposedly worth around $16 million. These projects are part of a 15-year, $12.1 billion construction program. Gonzalez explained his stance to the Chicago Tribune. "The issue is that we’re heading toward a huge capital development program and we have to make every effort to make sure we increase our minority participation in those contracts … to create jobs and (ensure people are) fairly represented in the south suburbs,” Gonzalez said. …

Abstaining from voting is cowardly in my opinion. We had a certain Senator from IL that was big on abstaining. He is now President. It is simply a tactic to improve political future. I do wish the Mayor would focus on the business of the Heights.   more ›

Highway Motoring for Mere Pennies per Mile

"5 Things You Should Know About Our Tollway," thanks to a talk by Kristi Lafleur, the toll way authority's executive director.

Did you know it costs you just three to four cents per mile to drive our state's toll highways? In this economy, every penny counts. As the Illinois Toll Highway Authority lays plans for the next decade of projects and improvements, Executive Director Kristi Lafleur says the economy will be a prime consideration in all decisions. "How do we promote economic development and job creation?" Lafleur asked, noting that the Toll Authority needs to partner with the communities it serves to help foster commercial growth and employment opportunities. Lafleur, 36, the first woman to lead the Toll Authority, addressed the Southland Chamber of Commerce's monthly luncheon at the Tinley Park Convention Center Monday.
