The go-to guide for all the information Heights residents need to know for Election Day.

For the past several months, you've watched as we followed Jesse Jackson Jr.'s (D) elusive behavior and eventual diagnosis with Bipolar II Disorder—and the responses of opponents Marcus Lewis (I) and Brian Woodworth (R). You've also seen Lewis' critical response to a leaked audio recording of a pastor's phone conversation with Congressman Jackson—and the media. Let's not forget that, among the fray, JJJ has some issues with the FBI looming over his burdened shoulders. Slightly lesser known has been the race of incumbent Toi Hutchinson (D) against opponent Robert "Tuck" Marshall (R) for the 40th District Senate. For several weeks now, Sen. Hutchinson has been blogging her political progress exclusively on Patch. Marshall is coming back from…

Opponent Says Jackson is ‘Secretly Campaigning' Through Pastors

Second Congressional Candidate Marcus Lewis says leaked audio of a Matteson pastor’s sermon is evidence that the current congressman is campaigning through religious figures, and that this particular church’s tax-exempt status should be in question.

This article was updated at 11:55 a.m. on Oct. 31, 2012 to include information about the 501(c)(3) tax exemption. Controversy erupted on the Patch comment boards Tuesday when we released an audio recording of Matteson Rev. Andrew Singleton Jr. vocalizing his support for the re-election of U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. The recording now has independent opponent Marcus Lewis contending that the pastor’s speech may be in a violation of the law and that Jackson is using religious authorities as a sneaky campaign trick. "He's campaigning across the pulpit," Lewis said. "His church can and should lose its tax-exempt status because of that." In the recording, Singleton tells his congregation at Victory Apostolic Church he continues to support …

Jackson Still Favored by Voters in Latest 2nd District Poll

An FBI investigation and the mental health drama surrounding U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. have not threatened his re-election to Congress, according to a poll released today.

Jesse Jackson Jr. shows a commanding lead over his two challengers, with 58 percent of likely voters saying they would send the beleaguered congressman back to the U.S. House for two more years, according to a new We Ask America poll. Republican Brian Woodworth would be the choice of 27 percent of voters, and independent challenger Marcus Lewis is favored by 15 percent. Woodworth said he will not read too much into the poll, but took an optimistic view of the results. "A poll is a just poll and not an indicator of success or loss," Woodworth said. "I’m actually encouraged because Republicans typically don’t make up a third of the district. So that means maybe some Democrats have swung over. We’ll see what happens. I’m going to stay …

Marcus Lewis Gets Active on Patch: Names in the News

The Independent candidate for the Second District congressional election has turned the comment thread of an article into an impromptu Q&A session.

What started as an attempt to clarify comments about mental illness in political candidates has turned into an online meet and greet for congressional candidate Marcus Lewis. Lewis, a longtime employee of the United States Postal Service, will appear on the November ballot as an independent candidate, and his frequent commenting on Patch articles ensures that a few more people will already be familiar with the name.  Some Patch users have criticized Lewis for focusing too much on the incumbent Jesse Jackson Jr.'s mental state, but Lewis says voters will need to factor Jackson's bipolar diagnosis into their decision at the polls. Patch blogger and Prairie State College Trustee Marc Wiley, asked Lewis a series of specific questions about his…
