Heights Creates New Liquor License for Mobil Gas

The mayor says the business owner deserves the city’s 16th liquor license, but Alderman Josh Deabel isn’t so convinced.

Chicago Heights city council approved the addition of another liquor license during their Feb. 4 meeting. The new license, awarded to the Mobil gas station at 431 W 14th Street, is the 16th of its kind according to the Northwest Indiana Times. The decision, however, was not unanimous. Mayor David Gonzalez says his administration has generally worked to reduce the number of available liquor licenses in town, but this case is an exception. According to him, Husain contributes roughly $400,000 in annual sales and property taxes, according to the NWI Times report. Angry Cigar Smoker Assaults Gas Station Clerk and Candy Rack: Police

The man and his friend jumped over the counter at the gas station and threatened to beat the clerk, according to the police report.

A gas station clerk saw a candy rack get attacked and almost shared its fate after he gave a customer some bad news. On Dec. 17, a man went into Mobil Gas, located at 431 W. 14th St., and asked for a certain type of cigar. When the clerk told the man he did not have it, the man went into a rage and pulled down a rack of candy, according to the report.  Sign up for Chicago Heights Patch news alerts. The angry smoker then went out to the vehicle he arrived in, a 1998 gold Pontiac. The clerk went out after him and wrote down the man's license plate number, according to the report. Park Forest Man Charged with Murder After Gas Station Shooting

The owner of the gas station told Tribune reporters the shooter waited for police to arrive.

A Park Forest man was charged with murder after the Tuesday morning shooting death of Robert Fortson of Chicago Heights at a local gas station, according to police. Dennis Joyner, 60, was in a dispute with Fortson over a rental property that Joyner owned, police learned during their investigation. The dispute ended with Joyner shooting Fortson several times at the Mobil gas station in the 400 block of Lincoln Highway, according to Head of Detectives Joseph Bruni.
