SouthSTAR Services, Chicago Heights Resident's Photos on Display at Union Street Gallery

Brian Denton, a SouthSTAR Services and Chicago Heights resident who is developmentally disabled, was chosen to display two of his photos at the Union Street Gallery's 'Rediscover Chicago Heights,' exhibit. Denton called the honor a 'dream come true.'

As the part of Rediscover Chicago Heights events that are taking place around town, Heights and SouthSTAR Services resident Brian Denton will show off his passion for photography with a display at the Union Street Gallery. Brian Denton, who is developmentally disabled, was chosen to show his photos after he took part in SouthSTAR's 'Dare to Dream' program. “This is a dream come true for me,” Denton said in a press release. “I love taking pictures of people and different things in Chicago Heights, but also want to take pictures in a bunch of different places around Illinois.” Several years ago, Denton said he got his first camera from his father, for Christmas. Photo Project Invites Residents to 'Rediscover' Chicago Heights

Union Street Gallery is working on something big, inviting residents to be a part of the city's history.

There are jewels in Chicago Heights worthy of becoming art. Some residents say it's a small waterfall in the woods. Others say it's their church. Mayor Gonzalez has shared a full list of locations, from Arche Fountain to Memorial Mound. Since Nov. 2012, Union Street Gallery has been leading a project meant to capture that art. The community-wide photography project, running through May, focuses on the positive in our community. Thanks to funding from Chicago Community Trust, the gallery is bringing together artists, citizen photographers and community leaders to create an amazing set of images of the Heights.
