Joliet defense lawyer Michael J. Renzi, of New Lenox, and assistant state's attorney Fred Harvey put their professional differences aside to work some dramatic magic in a production of "12 Angry Men."
The last thing assistant state's attorney Fred Harvey needs is some rogue juror swaying the other 11 and snatching a dead-bang guilty verdict out of his hands. But that's exactly the role Harvey is playing in the Drama Group's production of 12 Angry Men. Lucky for Harvey, the play is being directed by defense attorney Michael J. Renzi, who might have a little more sympathy for the Henry Fonda character and the way he steers the rest of the jury toward an acquittal. Harvey, a Joliet resident working in the Will County State's Attorney's Office, and Renzi, who lives in New Lenox and practices in Joliet, cross paths each day on the fourth floor of the downtown courthouse. And the last few months the two theater veterans have been working to …
The show opens Friday and will continue through the next two weekends.

Poignant two-person play, starring an Oak Lawn woman and a Mount Greenwood man, reveals FDNY chief's struggle to find words to honor those who died during the aftermath of the terrorist attacks.
Just weeks after Sept. 11, 2001, writer Anne Nelson penned a script that remains an iconic look back at a day that cost thousands of American lives and left a nation reeling. Under the direction of Oak Lawn resident Amanda Barclay, Nelson’s stunning two-person, one-act play, The Guys — 10th Anniversary of the Day That Changed Us All, comes to life at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Oak Lawn on Sept. 9, 10 and 11. The production features Sandy Barry of Oak Lawn and Dean Hoefler of Mount Greenwood. The story focuses on a Fire Department of New York chief who lost several men in the aftermath of the World Trade Center terrorist attacks. Nick, the FDNY chief, needs to write eulogies for his men and finds himself struggling to put thoughts and …

Dateline: Baltimore, 1962 Perky, personable and a dynamite dancer, teenager Tracy Turnblad yearns to be on the Corny Collins Show (think Dick Clark, circa 1950s and '60s). One issue could stand in her way: Tracy is chunky. So begins the blockbuster Broadway musical Hairspray, a story of teens, their fight against social injustice and an adult community that fights the changing times. Under the direction of Erica Heilmann, the Oak Lawn Park District Theatre, with a whopping cast of 56, continues its own smash hit production of Hairspray through this weekend only. “Tracy (played by Carli Wheeler) gets on the Corny Collins Show, falls in love and launches a fight to get blacks and whites together on the dance program,” Heilmann said with …

American playwright Neil Simon finds the humor in life's toughest times, including the struggles of basic training for soldiers heading off to the Allied battlefields of World War II. Set at the mid-1940s Biloxi Army base, Biloxi Blues is the second in Simon's semi-autobiographical trilogy that also includes Brighton Beach Memoirs and Broadway Bound. Eugene Jerome, Simon's protagonist, heads to boot camp in Biloxi and along with the other recruits, serves under a brutal drill sergeant. The play follows Jerome and his bunkmates through the days of basic training with all its trials and tribulations. And yes, Simon, now 83, did enlist in the Army in 1945 at 18. The war ended shortly after he joined the military and while he did not see …

Gifted with a soft, rich tenor voice, Roger McGuinn, legendary vocalist with the 1960s folk-rock band The Byrds, returns to the Beverly Arts Center tonight with songs, stories and his original seven-string guitar. In last week’s SouthScene piece about McGuinn (correctly pronounced McGwinn), I mentioned this week’s column would reveal a Peter Fonda anecdote, the story behind McGuinn's seven-string guitar and how the McGuinns go green. McGuinn will share many tales with his audience tonight but will not disappoint musically. In addition to songs from his ongoing online Folk Den project designed to rescue folk music from obscurity, McGuinn will return to familiar Byrds megahits including Turn, Turn, Turn (There is a season), Hey, Mr. Banjo …
