Rose Awards Allow Heights Businesses to Say 'Thanks'

The Chicago Heights Business Council is asking local businesses to nominate standout employees and colleagues.

Local business owners will once again get the opportunity to show appreciation to those around them next month. Chicago Heights businesses will gather for the second year of the Rose Awards, this time at the Union Street Gallery. One of the highlights of the event is its emphasis on honoring the people that matter in the day-to-day operations of Heights businesses. There really aren't any restrictions on who business owners and managers can nominate for a Rose, according to Chicago Heights Business Council Executive Director Susan Wolf. "This is a wonderful way to recognize someone that perhaps works behind the scenes, someone who goes the extra mile or a client that you have enjoyed working with," Wolf said. Homewood Artist To Offer Colorful Class At Chicago Heights Park District

Homewood artist Chuck Michaels invites Chicago Heights residents to see the world in living colors.

Michaels, who will teach an evening watercolors course for seniors and another open to all ages, acknowleges that some people lack confidence with a paintbrush. "I always tell people: With watercolors, you get pleasant surprises," said Michaels, "You can do it." Michaels is an exhibitor at Chicago Heights' Union Street Gallery, 1527 Otto Blvd, as well as the Tall Grass Arts Association in Park Forest. He has also volunteered at Glenwood High School. Week in Review

A 'Phantom' Writer, a Passionate Pastor and Plane-Pulling Police

A look back at the most compelling stories published on Chicago Heights Patch for the week of Oct. 9-15.

Not many of us would pay good money and drive all the way out to O'Hare International Airport to pull 90-tons of metal. Chicago Heights Police donated to the Special Olympics of Illinois just to do that. They did it well too. Take a look at the original story, "Chicago Heights Police Pull 90-Ton Plane for a Good Cause," to learn more about the cops' impressive feat.  Prince of Peace Lutheran Church was the subject of our last People of Faith entry, and Pastor Patrick Shebeck was not shy about revealing the things that make his church different from others. Shebeck said the church accepts gay clergy and isn't afraid to tackle tough issues, including the problems with health insurance in America. Read the original story, "Chicago Heights …

Business Comings & Goings: Chicago Heights to Acquire Union Street Gallery, 56 Other Properties

A look at new businesses coming into town and a fond farewell to those that have, for whatever reason, called it quits.

Chicago Heights aldermen voted unanimously last week to buy the building that houses the Union Street Gallery as well as 56 other properties including a vacant seven-story building that once was home to First National Bank. The city plans to rent the building to the Union Street Gallery for a nominal fee of $1 per year. The other properties will be acquired at little or no cost to the city through property tax scavenger sales with an eye toward future development near a proposed downtown Metra station that will be part of the planned Southeast Commuter Rail Transit District running from downtown Chicago to Balmoral Park in Crete. The International Beauty Salon was recently renamed Nora’s Beauty Salon at 2709 Chicago Road in South Chicago …
