We're taking a look back at five key stories we published in 2012, but feel free to add to the list in our comments section!
March 16, 2012 The Bloom 206 boy's basketball team kicked off a year of incredible athletic accomplishments in Chicago Heights when they went to the Class 4A State Semifinals. The excitement surrounding the moment made for one of the best photo galleries of 2012. Team finished 4th and game home to a ton of support from the City of Chicago Heights, including a pat on the back from Mayor David Gonzalez. Oct. 29, 2012 A broken wrist for Brandon Kelly became a blessing for the Homewood Cancer Support Center, as he raised hundreds of dollars by donning a pink cast and asking anyone that signed it to donate money to the organization. Today we round out our list of the top stories of the year.
In case you missed, take a look at our our other top stories of 2011 in yesterday's post. Now, let's finish out the list with five more standouts of the year. When I decided it would be a good Patch series to highlight area residents that have done something special in their lives, I didn't know what I had signed up for. In my opinion, the Chicago Heights area has some of the most interesting people in Illinois. There was Dorothy Hajdys-Clausen, who lost her son to a hate crime before becoming a prominent voice in opposing the the Don't Ask, Don't Tell military policy. There was Cynthia Thompson, the school teacher, beauty queen and black belt fighter. And what about Ray Deabel? He's a St. James Hospital chaplain with a garage full of dirt…

Leaps from burning buildings, political wars and local tragedies, it all happened in 2011. Take a look back at this year in coverage.
Chicago Heights and its surrounding communities experienced a lot in 2011, and Patch, in it's infancy, was there to cover as much as we could. Here are five of the top stories of the year. Check back tomorrow for five more. For many reasons, 2011 was a big year for high school government. Two Unity Party candidates scooped up positions on the board, and soon after, two-year board member Henry Drake was named president. Drake clashed with longtime board member Robert Rossi on multiple issues, including the firing of the district's chosen law firm and the hiring of Drake's wife as an accounts payable clerk. Drake and Rossi's names even showed up in a police report after a behind-closed-doors altercation. The biggest conflict between the two …

The nominees are in. Let us know who should be the person of the year.
Updated at 12:16 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 31. Chicago Heights Mayor David Gonzalez took the top honors for Person of the Year, with Margaret Burns-Westmeyer and the Rev. Walter Mosby pulling in tons of votes as well. Let us know what you think about the mayor's win! Below is a list of all the nominees and the reasons they were nominated. Police Chief Michael Camilli - "He works very hard every day making decisions to ensure that Chicago Heights is as safe as it can be, so that it's a place where children can play in the streets without the threat of danger or harm. Not to mention, that is is a very respectable man who can say that he truly cares about his work after 35 years in service. Chicago Heights is lucky to have him." "Bringing police …

Chicago Heights Patch has been in existence for a year now, and what a year it's been.
Well, it's official. Today marks the one-year anniversary of Chicago Heights Patch's launch day. This time last year, we were reporting on a Heights native known as Mrs. Claus and helping out with last-minute gift wrapping. A local school teacher told us about her connection to the history of Hap Bruno Field. Students at Garfield and Lincoln Schools were handed stockings full of hope. Since Dec. 23, 2010, Chicago Heights has seen a lot of change. The city has a new mayor, three new aldermen, and recently lost a longtime incumbent in Willie White. We've got an elected city clerk and treasurer for the first time, and the city has seven wards instead of six. Bloom Township High School District 206 saw two new board members elected and …
