Shelter Dog Offers Grieving Family 'Pet Therapy'

Friends believe adopted shelter dog was sent by late hushand to comfort and guard over family.

The sudden passing left her and her two sons, Andrew, 8, and Ryan, 4, with broken hearts and a big, empty space where their husband and father used to be. “After Steve died, I thought about getting a dog. A dog was never an option when Steve was here—he was horribly allergic. I looked at the listings (online) and nothing really called to me." That’s largely because all of Burke’s former pets came to her serendipitously she says, citing an experience in her youth when a stranger thrust a puppy into her hands, got into her car and sped off. Eight Men Charged with Felony after Dog Fight Bust

All attendees of the Dec. 6 bust were charged with attending and patronizing a dog fight.

Police charged all eight attendees of last week's Dolton dog fighting bust with class 4 felonies. Cops caught the men after receiving a tip about a dog fight at the 1500 block of 142nd Street on the night of Dec. 6. One of the men, Willie McCray, 26, of Calumet City has a no-bond warrant for "Murder, Strong Probability Death/Injury." South Suburban Humane Society investigators rescued seven dogs from the scene. Cuddly Kipling: Adopt Me!

This Basenji Terrier mix is looking for a loving family to go home with.

Meet Kipling. SSHS workers rescued him from neglectful owners about five months ago. When they showed up to get him, he was chained outside without food, water or shelter. He's since fattened up a bit, thanks to the love and care from the folks at SSHS. Even though his previous owners were unkind, Kipling harbors no resentment towards people. In fact, he's extremely friendly to adults, kids and other dogs. To learn more about Kipling, visit his listing on the South Suburban Humane Society's (SSHS) website! What a Beauty: Adopt Me!

This week, we're featuring Beauty, an adult pitbull terrier mix.

Meet Beauty. She's a spunky four-year-old who would love to play ball in the backyard with the kids. I Dream of Genie: Adopt Me!

This week's featured pet is Genie, a small Jack Russell and Welsh Corgi mix.

Meet Genie. She's a small an unique mixed breed with tons of energy. Genie's fairly aware of her special nature and tends to have a high opinion of herself around other dogs, so she might be best for a family with no other pets. Though her legs are short, she's pretty fast, making her a grear dog to play fetch with. To learn more about Genie, visit his listing on the South Suburban Humane Society's (SSHS) website!
