Sheriff Tom Dart says CHIProperties has been issuing "highly illegal" notices to a number of Cook County residents.
Cook County Sheriff Thomas J. Dart directed a Chicago-based property management company to immediately cease and desist from providing tenants in Cook County, who reside in properties that are the subject of foreclosure proceedings, with illegal notices that contain threats and misleading, inaccurate information. CHIProperties of Chicago has been posting notices telling rental residents they are considered trespassers and must call immediately to make arrangements to move out. County President Toni Preckwinkle is asking 1,500 inmates be transferred to home-monitoring, to prevent an overcrowding crisis, ABC7 reports.
Cook County Jail is nearly full to bursting. Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle is asking the detention center to reduce its 10,000+ population by 1,500 because there is not enough money to pay for them, ABC7 reports. At its current rate of admissions, the prison is poised to exceed its 10,150-prisoner capacity "within days." "The population I had today is what I'd normally have at the worst time of the year," Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart told ABC7. "You can't sustain that. My overtime budget is exploding right now, absolutely exploding. I'm already close to going through what I was supposed to do for the whole year." Local fugitives nabbed in sting with promise of cash and free flat-screen TVs.
The lure of free electronics and cash helped net more than 100 wanted fugitives in a sting organized by Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart announced Tuesday. The fugitives thought they were coming to a Southwest Side warehouse to test new home electronics. Instead, county sheriff’s police arrested them. “Operation C.W. Marketing” was a two-week effort that targeted fugitives wanted for violent felonies, misdemeanor traffic offenses, unpaid child support and contempt of court charges, Dart said in a press release. The sting resulted in 102 arrests, with 106 warrants cleared, including 15 felonies, 72 misdemeanors and 15 from civil courts. A south suburban woman—accused of beating an elderly relative with a stick and letting him live amid animal feces, urine and trash—has been arrested by the Cook County Sheriff's Department. Denise Thomas, 49, of the 20900 block of South Cottage Grove in Ford Heights is charged with one count of domestic battery to a person over 60, according to the sheriff. A friend of the elderly victim called police after learning the victim had been struck by Thomas and that the two were living in unhealthy conditions, according to police. Patrol officers visited on the home on April 15 and found that there was no running water or heat. Officers also found that the food in the refrigerator was spoiled because there was no electricity.
